Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….
- BBC News : Somali woman stoned for adulteryWords fail me.
- BBC News : Power-guzzling TVs to be banned(1) TV usage accounts for a freaking 10% of home energy usage in California? Yeesh! (2) I’m sure that if there were cheap TVs that guzzled coal and belched smoke, the “industry representatives” would complain that restricting them was somehow interfering with “consumer choice.” Oh, wait — that’s exactly what we’re talking about here.
- Largest cruise ship in the world – Bits & Pieces: Because what could possibly go wrong with a ship that looks as top-heavy as that? (Paging Irwin Allen …)
- Crowdsourcing Comedy on Amazon Reviews – Pogue’s Posts Blog – NYTimes.com: Ha!
- AFA: Gap Stores Support Witchcraft!!! – Joe. My. God.: Yes, heaven forfend that anyone notice that Christmas just happens to fall right about when the winter Solstice (and various Roman pagan festivals associated thereto) does. Or realize, despite the timing chosen by the Church for Christmas, the actual Biblical narrative (shepherds in the fields) implies a spring timing for the actual nativity. No, by mentioning “Christmas” and “Solstice” in the same jingle, clearly the AFA supports witchcraft and hates Christianity. Yeesh.
- Illinois Family Institute Calls For Boycott Of Scholastic Books Over Gay-Friendly Title – Joe. My. God.: As noted earlier here, the book in question isn’t even about “gay parenting,” but has a character who happens to have lesbian parents. But maybe that subtle patina of normalcy and background acceptance is even more threatening to the IFI.
- Maddow: Religous Wingnuts Ramp Up Calls For President Obama's Death – Joe. My. God.: Y’know, if I were intentionally plotting to discredit Christianity (let alone political conservatism and the GOP), it’d be hard to beat this sort of yahooism. And they’re freaking proud of it! (In the clip below, the “good” parts are between about 2:00 and 4:20)
- Eric Hananoki: Conspiracy website WND teams up with House Republicans at the Capitol – Media Matters for America – County Fair: Idjits of a feather flock together.
- Jamison Foser: Abortion and the fungibility of federal funds – Media Matters for America – County Fair: Fungibility for me, but not for thee!
- Eric Boehlert: Why didn't Newsweek name names in its Obama bow piece? – Media Matters for America – County Fair: Yes. Name names. Maybe if yahoos like Krauthammer and Limbaugh and the idjits on Fox & Friends had their names openly associated with all the drivel they spew, folks would begin to realize how incoherently fringe their opinions actually are.
- DC Marriage Equality and Religious Liberty- People For the American Way Blog blogs: Money graf: “If the issue is genuinely religious liberty, then shouldn’t those with religious opposition to interracial marriages receive the same protection of their religious beliefs, noxious though they may be? Shouldn’t those who believe God wants America to throw out all people of color be protected from having to provide services for non-whites’ weddings? Or shouldn’t they be allowed to force people to present proof of citizenship, if they claim their religious belief calls for America to expel undocumented aliens? If someone’s religious belief is that Christians are worshipping a mortal man in violation of the Ten Commandments, why is her religious liberty less protected when she wants to deny services related to Christian weddings?”
- Ollie North Launches New War Against ‘Cap And Tax,’ ‘Bird Eating Machines,’ And The ‘Myth Of Global Warming’ – Think Progress: (1) We shouldn’t believe in the scientific consensus on global warming, but we should consider wind farms to be “bird eating machines.” (2) It’s all a scheme to support Red China! (Um … I didn’t know anyone still called it “Red China.”) (3) We should believe anything Ollie North has to say because …?
- Texas gay marriage ban may have outlawed all marriages in Texas. – Think Progress: I doubt anything will actually come of it — but, yeah, that’s grotesquely sloppy language. And given how constitutional law hinges so much on linguistic nuance, it’s really unforgivable, especially since it was warned about beforehand.
- Fox News displays old campaign footage to claim Palin is getting ‘huge crowds’ at her book signings. – Think Progress: What is it with Fox News and “accidental” misuse of file footage?
- Palin: ‘Jewish Settlements Should Expand,’ Even In Palestinian Areas – Think Progress: Aside from being just plain wrong, I find it … interesting (and uncommented upon here) that Palin suggests that Jewish people will be “flocking to Israel in the days and weeks and months ahead.” Sounds like someone has been reading too much Tim LaHaye. Heck, even “Gog and Magog” Bush didn’t open support Jewish settlement expansion on the West Bank.
- Exclusive: Attacks On Health Reform Orchestrated By Yet Another Shadowy Corporate Front Group — ‘CMPI’ – Think Progress: Pay no attention to the corporate interests behind that curtain! Look! Over there! Acorn! ACORN!
- Internment Camps — Bring ‘Em On? « Texas Freedom Network:The argument seems to be, “Well, yeah, internment camps are arguably not the best thing to do — but they’re better than doing nothing and being knifed by rogue Muslim Army Soldiers in our sleep!”
- Gohmert Goes There – The Washington Monthly: Ah — yet another Republican Representative (dear God) from Texas (of course) chimes in.
- Right Wing Campaign Against Feldblum Goes Into Overdrive – Right Wing Watch: (1) I’m highly amused that the Religious Right is criticizing someon as a “master at using the language of moral imperatives to further her agenda.” (2) Oh, no! If we prohibit discrimination against gays in the workplace, we’ll have to let them into the Army! And once that happens, then the Defense of Marriage Act will be “utterly defenseless” against “rouge [sic] judges”! (3) I love the rhetorical idea of pro-gay “rouge judges.”
- What Say You Now, Bill Donohue? – Right Wing Watch: I’m sure Bill will say that the study he touted as supporting his opinion is, now that it seems it doesn’t, wrong.
