Unblogged Bits for Wed, 24 Feb 2010, 3:48PM

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. You Shall Know His Velocity: Speedy Gonzales Gets a Movie – Well, that’s pretty interesting …
  2. Mall security guard accuses shopper of being a paedophile for photographing his own son – The (mostly) UK War on Photography continues …
  3. IP Alliance says that encouraging free/open source makes you an enemy of the USA – War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength …
  4. BuzzCanTweet – Tweet your Buzz – This looks much like Buzz2Tweet, though (a) with better controls and customization, but (b) without a Google Reader analog.
  5. Coins! Coins! – Real Life Comics – strip for February / 23 / 2010 – This does, in fact, sound like a solution I would propose. Though if proposed to me, I’d immediately come up with the counter-solution.
  6. Unsex The Oscars — Let The Best Performer Win : NPR – This makes tremendous sense to me.
  7. BBC News – Police fears over ‘Anyone but England’ T-shirt – “Keeping the peace” is a catch-all police term for “poking our noses in wherever we like and doing whatever the heck we want.”
  8. BBC News – India court snub for luxury Gandhi pen – Trying to figure out who thought this was a good idea.
  9. Element 112 joins the periodic table – 17 June 2009 – New Scientist – “These are the only ones of which the news has come to Hahrvard / There may be many others but they haven’t been discahvered …”
  10. Ten Women Of Fables | Comics Should Be Good! @ Comic Book Resources – One of my favorite comics — and, yes, the strong female leads are a big part of that.
  11. Chinese Net Memes – Wow. Glad their memes are as goofy as ours. Though I may use the “soy sauce” one …
  12. Serious threat to the web in Italy – A nice case of a court preferring order and simplistic answers, regardless of the consequences. This will be interesting to watch.
  13. After Voting To Block Debate On Jobs Bill, Vitter Bemoans Senate’s Lack Of ‘Open Debate’ – Money graf: “Of course, all of these complaints would hold a lot more water if Vitter hadn’t voted just last night, along with 29 other Republicans, to prevent the Reid bill from ever coming to the floor. Now he’s calling it ‘progress’ that the Senate is addressing jobs, while last night he was content to block a jobs bill from ever seeing the light of day.”
  14. Reconciliation is not the ‘nuclear option’ – Money graf: “Is this really that hard to understand? Probably not, but Republicans are pretending to be outraged, hoping that the public won’t know better.”
  15. Miss Beverly Hills tries to one-up Carrie Prejean, says it’s divine law that gays be put to death. – Summary: “I have lots of friends who are gay and when we decide it’s time for them to be stoned to death, per the Bible, I promise there will be no hatred between me and them. And I want to be a brain surgeon!”
  16. DNA’s Dirty Little Secret – Michael Bobelian – As usual, using a tool for something that it wasn’t designed to do leads to mixed results. Add in secrecy, ego, and “confusing” science and math, and the results can destroy lives.
  17. 16th Street Mall improvements pitched this week – The Denver Post – While I’m all for driving business to the 16th Street Mall, I’m unconvinced that the current bus lane alignment is the source of the problems, or that changing it (subtly or radically) is going to bring a new renaissance to the area.
  18. Wrecking ball meets Denver hotel – The Denver Post – Wow. A remarkable landmark to just tear down. I mean, I understand if the property wasn’t making money (and it’s in an odd spot), but it’s still a bit jarring to think it won’t be looming over the freeway any more.
