Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Data Shows Horrifying Bank Of America Refinance Story Actually Typical – Banks traditionally haven’t wanted the hassle of dealing with foreclosed properties, so I can only chalk this up to gross incompetence and inept management.
  2. YouTube: Viacom secretly posted its videos even as they sued us for not taking down Viacom videos – What?! A Big Media company working in an illicit and unethical fashion around its intellectual property? Inconceivable!
  3. The politics of yakuza (or Q&A with Jake Adelstein pt 2): Lisa Katayama
  4. The Sound of Thirsty Trees – Cool …
  5. Betsy Markey To Vote Yes On Health Care, Even If It Costs Her Career – And that’s a “Profiles in Courage” moment. As Edmund Burke put it, “Your representative owes you, not his industry only, but his judgment; and he betrays, instead of serving you, if he sacrifices it to your opinion.” (Or, considered more cynically, it’s not like the GOP wasn’t going to attack her if she didn’t vote Yes on health care reform.)
  6. Congressman Steve King: Heath Care Vote On Sunday “Takes Away The Liberty” God Gave Us – Actually, voting for health care on the Sabbath, during Lent, sounds like a very moral and devotional and appropriate thing to do. “Love thy neighbor as thyself …”
  7. 150,000 take FCC broadband speed test in first week – I’m pleased to see the FCC actually interested in this sort of stuff.
  8. “Piracy” sounds too sexy, say rightsholders
  9. Years late, Universal cuts CD prices to combat poor sales – This would, in fact, encourage me to buy more CDs … which I will then rip into MP3s. I prefer having the original physical disc as a backup.
  10. It’s ‘not fun’ for poor Bart Stupak these days. People are being mean. – While I can’t support actual harrassment, politicians who take controversial stands (of whatever nature) and then whine about how people don’t like them need to have a copy of “Profiles in Courage” mailed to their office.
  11. Limbaugh To 11-Year-Old Child: “Your Mom Would Have Still Died.” – And people still listen to this guy. What an ass.
  12. Senator Coburn Threatens Democrats Who Vote Yes On Health Care – Very, very classy, Tom.
  13. Insurance Company Intentionally Targeted, Dropped HIV Patients – Um … when you look up “EVIL” in the dictionary, you’ll see this picture …
  14. Grocery Self-Checkout: Blessing Or Scourge? – I find self-checkout fun (yes, I’m weird). I like to bag my own groceries (no soup cans on top the bread, please).
  15. What’s more awesome than discovering a temperate planet outside our solar system? – As science fiction continues to morph into science fact …
  16. Will health care reform cause physicians to flee? [White Coat Underground] – I’m sure Glenn Beck will be screaming the results of this (statistically laughable) poll to the four winds.
  17. 12 Sakura Manhole Covers – These are lovely.

  1. With regard to self check-out;
When given a choice (and the line is shorter, which is usually is at say Home Depot), I use the self check.
Fresh & Easy (a newish market-type place) only has self check out, though they do have employees that hover around and help if you have issues. I have no issue with their self check.
No of my regularly attended markets (other than the previous) have self check, which I partly ascribe to being in a lower income area where security at the market remains tighter than in more upscale regions.
Also, unless a product meets its sales targets, it’s gone, so I often have to make trips to where my dad lives to get unusual products. They don’t have self check either!
