Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….
- Sony accuses Beyonce of piracy for putting her videos on YouTube – Remember, they’re just trying to protect the rights of artists!
- Aurora Sentinel > Archives > Opinion > Columnists > Kaul: Racism just isn’t funny – “Political correctness” can lead to some pretty screwed-up mental and social gyrations — but, most dangerously, its extremes have let yahoos (yes) on the other side of things use it as a dismissive accusation. “Don’t like us telling racist jokes? You’re just being PC” is as simplistic and destructive as saying, “Don’t like our being politically correct? You’re just being racist.”
- What Good Were They? – That ACORN got thrown to the wolves by the Dems (including the former “community activist” in the White House) is not just shameful, but ultimately counterproductive to Democratic values. It’s a moral victory (and perpetual bogie man) for the Right, and they’ll be going on to attack every other similar organization, plus any place the local ACORN groups or personnel move to, tarring the cause with the “guilt” of that faux scandal.
- 12 vicious values (cont’d.) – Why Glenn Beck’s 912 Project prefers “values” to “virtues,” a telling comparison to the Scout Law, and two particular “values” presented that are effectively no virtue at all. Very nicely done.
- Palin Tells Constitution-Loving Tea Partiers: We Don’t Need A President Who Is A ‘Constitutional Law Professor’ – There’s no conflict here at all. They honor the Constitution as they understand it, and don’t want some “pointy-headed intellectual” telling them they understand it (and so much else) poorly.
- Classic Tea Party Response – It’s certainly worth noting that (a) the TPs are not some monolithic ideology, but (b) more of a generalized anti-government movement. Recall that “TEA” meant “Taxed Enough Already,” which is a generalized but modestly coherent ideology, sort of a Libertarianism Lite. But it’s developed over the months into a simplistic anti-government bitch-fest … not solely about the size of government (government = taxes = BAD) but also criticizing government policies (lack of government regulation of BAD things = BAD; government regulation of GOOD things = GOOD). The movement is now ideologically incoherent, which let’s folks say apparently anti-libertarian things like this un-ironically. What will be interesting (and scary) to see is where things go from here, and who will manage to co-opt the movement’s members.
- Federal Government Takes Over Federal Program – How dare the federal government take over the federal student loan program!
- Dumbass Quote of the Day [Dispatches from the Culture Wars] – Wait — Newt, are you saying that LBJ shouldn’t have fought to enact civil rights legisation? And isn’t that the legislation that the Republicans keep magically taking credit for? Yeesh.
- American demographics – Things never go back to the way they were. And, as comforting as the illusions of the past are, that’s usually a good thing.
