  • Fended off the railroad bulls with a little something from my wallet. #
  • Outlook appears to be creaking along okay on my computer. Guess that means I have to get some real work done. #
  • Denver Light Rail loses power – we're stuck at Louisiana-Pearl Stn. Est 10 min to resolve. #
  • Or maybe my tweeting about it will Magically Fix It. Apparently so. #
  • Love watching folks play chess on the 16th St Mall. It's just play urban fun, and a sign of spring to boot. #Denver #
  • Y'know, Dave, getting the sudoku puzzle right may be hard, but not doing it wrong should be EASY. #stupidratcreature #
  • Picked new microwave at Best Buy. Not exactly the model I wanted, but a very attractive open box / last model special. Will visually check. #
  • Well, the new microwave appears to be intact, powers on, heats water, doesn't zorch WiFi, so I guess we're set. #
  • Movie Review: "The Last Song" is good, but very, very sad at the end (to a 9yo). Yes, dear, that's why I never rewatched "Out of Africa." #

  1. I’m surprised that you enjoy sudoku. I find it quite tedious. Every puzzle is the same. One simply hammers away at it until the numbers fit. I dislike this “brute force” approach.

I prefer word puzzles, where things like vocabulary come into play, such as crosswords and their variations: PennyPress’ Diagramless Crosswords (http://www.pennydellpuzzles.com/Upload/PuzzleFiles/Sample/dgr_p0508_samplepuz.pdf) and Codewords. I especially enjoy puzzles that allow you to take multiple approaches, such as PennyPress’ Anagram Magic Square.

It looks like the links on the last two didn’t work, so I removed them (am I allowed only one link?). Try Google.

    1. Well, I’ll confess one reason I succumbed to the craze due to being exposed to sudoku books pretty much everywhere around the house …

It’s not just a matter of hammering at the numbers, but of looking for patterns and using a variety of tactics. Brute-forcing through sudoku would be pretty tedious.

It’s also a chance to use a different set of mental muscles. And, when it works, it’s a nice victory. I can usually get through a puzzle in a train ride or less. It’s something to do other than read a book (not that there’s anything wrong with reading a book).

Anagramish thing you sent looks interesting, but is probably more mental exercise than I’m usually looking for.

I enjoy crosswords, too, though the difficulty calibration on them is annoying.
