Unblogged Bits (Wed. 5-May-10 2000)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Some of my rookie mistakes. – Some great writing advice here (judging from its alignment to my own writing mistakes).
  2. The Vileness of Joe Lieberman : EvolutionBlog – This expresses my opinion of Lieberman’s proposal — and the applause from the GOP: “This sort of thing makes Lieberman a darling of the right, a group populated primarily by pussies. Acting tough is about as close as they ever get to the real thing. That is why they are constantly prancing around with their guns and trying to out-sadist each other in contemplating the interrogation of suspects. They are perfectly happy to have a big, intrusive government so long as they believe it will only be other people who will be affected.” And to think they have the gall to wrap themselves in the flag.
  3. Quote of the Day – Because for most of the GOP congresscritters, it’s not about policy — it’s about winning.
  4. The GOP and Immigration Reform | Mother Jones – Money graf: “If you want to know what’s happened to the Republican Party over the last decade or so, this is it in a nutshell”
  5. Liberty University Fails To Gain Control of Lynchburg City Council – Well, I’ll be darned. Cue Nelson Muntz: “Haw-haw!”
  6. JAG Lawyer Lindsey Graham: ‘I Want To Stop Reading These Guys Their Miranda Rights’ – It’s really appalling, especially coming from the party that claims so loudly to love the Constitution.
  7. Arizona resident Charles Barkley calls anti-immigration law ‘disrespectful and disgusting.’ – Money quote from Barkley: “I’m very disappointed in John McCain. He used to be somebody I really admired and respected. … [M]ost of those immigrants here are busting their hump, doing a great job, and to go after them every couple years because you want to raise hell doing something to get re-elected, that’s disrespectful and disgusting.”
  8. Sens. Kyl And Roberts Pretend Republicans Never Embraced The Slogan ‘Drill, Baby, Drill’ – Sounds like a great challenge for some enterprising YouTube researchers to find Sens. Kyl and Roberts themselves using the phrase. (And, honestly, is “Drill here, drill now!” any less embarrassing?)
  9. Cantor says Americans are ‘better than’ everyone else. – Which demonstrates why the House Minority Whip is not usually the person you send on diplomatic missions.
  10. Media Ignore The Fact That Man Who Alerted Police To Failed Times Square Bombing Is A Muslim Immigrant – Actually, he alerted another person, who alerted the police, which is why Bloomberg didn’t mention him, either (though he did mention the mounted cop’s horse’s name, Mibs). At any rate, something to think about when assuming all Muslims are part of some vast KILL ALL AMERICANS conspiracy.
  11. “Are You Writing This Down?” – Tue, 04 May 2010 – Heh.
  12. High Doses of Antioxidants Can Mutate Your Stem Cells [Medicine] – Megadoses of anything, even vitamins, aren’t good for you — in fact, they may be actually bad.
  13. A church is a gaping hole cut into a community’s resources [Pharyngula] – No, installing parking meters on the street near a church is not infringing on your freedom of religion (unless they are being placed ONLY in front of the church).
  14. New privacy bill makes your location, sexual orientation “sensitive info” – It will be very interesting to see where, if anywhere, this bill goes. Codifying online privacy is good for both individuals and companies — the devil is in the details of what should be private, how to opt in (or out), etc.
  15. TV Economics 101: Why you can’t watch every show online for free – This makes sense. Bottom-line, unless you want taxpayer-funded TV, TV producers and distributors need to recoup their money somewhere. That’s not evil, that’s the marketplace.
  16. The Would-Be Facebook Refugee’s Dilemma – One reason why, viz online presence, I never gave up (or even moved mostly out of) my blog. As far as social space goes — well, actually, Orkut is very big in some parts of the world, and if it remained “do no evil,” it could become increasingly enticing to former FBers.
  17. click_click_click_comic.jpg – I wouldn’t. No, really. But the thought would cross my mind.
