Unblogged Bits (Wed. 12-May-10 0200)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Reflections on an empty studio – Artists are so much more than the mundane details of their environment. That’s part of what makes them special.
  2. Doctor Who S5, EP3 – “Victory of the Daleks” – I pretty much concur with this review, only to add that … I’m already really getting tired of Remarkably Clever Amy.
  3. Give thanks by saving: London’s VE & VJ Day 1945 in colour… – Some lovely V-E and V-J Day celebrations in London. Again, being shot in color makes it look, well, real.
  4. Reminder: Warwick Davis Is Still Totally Awesome – Various cameos elsewhere, he’ll always be Willow Ufgood to me.
  5. 20 Awesome Things To Know About Bacon | I Can Has Internets – BACON!
  6. Piracy: When Even a Penny Is Too Much | TorrentFreak – It’s a very interesting experiment in human behavior.
  7. HowStuffWorks “Are female orgasms essential to continuing the human species?” – For the record, my vote is an affirmative “YES!” At least in this household.
  8. Daily Kos: Fox News Ratings Dive: American IQ Rebounds – Well, that’s the best media news I’ve read in a long time.
  9. Jeremy Holden: Most Factor hosts can’t name the nine Supreme Court justices – Go, Papa Bear, go!
  10. The struggle to preserve or profit from ancient Babylon – I’d look to the UK; there are a lot of very historic sites there that manage to both have gift shoppes and tea shops and other tchotchkes vendors, yet also both preserve what’s been uncovered and provide the groundwork for further archaeological research. I would dearly love for some serious work to take place in Babylon.
  11. Rep. Steve King: Gays Shouldn’t Wear Their Sexuality ‘On Their Sleeve’ – Do you wear a wedding ring, Steve? Have pictures of your wife in your office? Admire the occasional hot chick that crosses your path? WHY ARE YOU WEARING YOUR HETEROSEXUALITY ON YOUR SLEEVE, STEVE?
  12. Twitter saves man stuck without toilet paper – Holy Kaw! – Take that all you Twitter disparagers.
  13. W62 – Reminds me of my old tech support days.
  14. YES – Yes!
  15. One thing worse than a bigot is a sneaky, devious, lying bigot – I think the kids in question were wrong, the school’s reaction was wrong, and Fox News is a bunch of jerks. Certainly no surprise in the last category.
  16. Mojave Cross Stolen – I can’t countenance vandalism (assuming it’s simply not theft), even if I’m sympathetic to people being ticked off about the ruling.
  17. Did Verizon’s Google Tablet Just Pour Cold Water On The Verizon iPhone Rumors? – Really don’t have much use for a Tablet, but if I were going to get one …
  18. REPORT: Kagan’s Experience Involved Handling More Than 23,000 Cases – Given that most politicians’ expertise consists of skills in fund-raising, their willingness to criticize Kagan’s substantive experience is fairly laughable.

    1. True, true. Though I don’t think any of the 9-11 Doctors’ Companions have been of that sort (and, along those same lines, that’s one reason I like Donna Noble so much).
