Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….
- REAL Vermonter-American Mama Grizzly Bear Defends Her Young – I’m sure it’s much easier for gay-bashers to stereotype their targets as leather-clad hedonists in Gay Pride parades (without considering the behavior of, say, straight folks attending Mardi Gras), than think of individuals and families like this one.
- Anti-Gay Family Values GOP Rep. Mark Souder To Resign Over Affair With Staffer – The most surprising thing here, given how so many others have ended up being driven from office, is that it was a female staffer.
- Proud Homophobe gets just desserts [Pharyngula] – As George points out, while Katz is hardly someone I’d invite over to dinner, give a medal of honor, or put in charge of anything that touches on his zany / reprehensible ideas, nothing presented here would have affected his participation in the clean-up effort. Firing him may feel good, but it’s irrational (and encourages everyone else to treat irrelevant ideological differences as meaningful).
- Texas congressman uses porn to kill science funding | Bad Astronomy – Because it’s all about winning the game, right? Especially, it seems, when you’re from Texas.
- Urinary tract infections becoming harder to treat, researchers find – No big surprise. Overuse of antibiotics ranks right up there with global warming as an ongoing, hidden crisis.

Yes, actually it is all about winning, and it is sad that the Dem’s keep not learning this lesson.
It’s not just about winning. It’s about winning for a good reason, not winning qua winning, or winning just to get reelected to keep winning. If the Dems learn a lesson, I hope it is that some people play just to win, and they need to strategize around that, not around (sadly) the idea that the GOP leadership are interested in a marketplace of ideas or a reaching a compromise on governing or even in recognizing how the elections went and taking the role of the loyal opposition.
