Unblogged Bits (Wed. 19-May-10 2000)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Glenn Beck Returns The Favor – Actually, the Colonial Virginia laws that Jerry is referencing were state laws; while the Anglican church was the established church in Virginia (and some other colonies), elsewhere (as in Massachusetts) it was the Congregational church. Many states required attendance at least some church on Sundays, had the state supporting the establishment church’s clergy, etc. That’s why we ended up with a 1st Amendment — not against King George III, but against ourselves.
  2. Rand Paul Not An Anomaly: More Fringe Tea Party Candidates Set To Knock Off Favored GOP Candidates – The GOP leadership figured if they encouraged the TPers, they’d turn around and vote the GOP ticket. Have to wonder if there might be some second thoughts about that strategy today.
  3. Follow-up: Miracle Whip, Rewhipped – I don’t care for Miracle Whip (or Mayo, or other White Food Lubricants), but I do like the new design.
  4. Making Good Typography on the Web Easier: Google Introduces Font API and Directory – I’m sure there will be some ugly things that follow, and some annoying caching issues — but this is very cool, and should make for more varied web pages. I have to wonder — will the WebFont then be stored on the machine, or does it have to be reloaded each time?
  5. Emergency Services Must Be Pooped: admin
  6. Google Wants to Save Web Video With the New “WebM” Format [Google] – I certainly hope this will displace Flash. I hope in so doing, it displaces the whole “let’s render this site in Flash (etc.)” mentality, too.
  7. Hunt’s Ketchup Removes High Fructose Corn Syrup – Huzzah!
  8. Yup, That’s Me. The “Bizarre” Mom on the Cover of the NY Daily News – There are 61 million children age 14 or younger in the US. There are under 60,000 annual cases of child abduction by non-family members. I don’t know that I’d be happy about even 1000-1 odds of someone kidnapping my daughter, but it’s not something I stay awake nights worrying about.
  9. Funny – Oh, my. This is funny. And … don’t drunk-dial FreedomWorks …
  10. Now Open To Everyone, Google Believes Wave Is Finally Ready To Roll – Wave certainly seems like something that someone should be able to do something really cool with …someday …
  11. Attorney General Tom Corbett Subpoenaes Twitter To Identify Anonymous Critics – As presented in the article, I’m not quite sure on what basis a subpoena could be issued. No secrets are revealed, and I’ve read far more libelous Tweets before. Sounds more like a “chilling action” suit than anything else. For shame.
  12. Google Previews Chrome Web Store — An App Store For The Web (If You’re Using Chrome) – So if I follow this correctly, the Chrome Web Store basically serves as an easier way to access/pay for web apps, but that’s essentially it (and will be the avenue for doing so with Chrome OS in the future). Okay, well, I guess that’s not evil.
  13. IOKIYNAM* – Money graf: “It will be interesting to see how the anti-rights Right reacts to the fact that suspects in this bombing could be presented with Miranda warnings, obtain legal counsel, actually get to stand trial (in civilian courts – which is the same as releasing suspects in our backyards!) and, you know, not get tortured and stuff.”
  14. The Plum Line – Who woulda thunk it: Fact-checking is popular! – The truth shall set you free. It might also earn you some extra money.
  15. 7 Lost Bodies of Work (That Would Have Changed Everything) | Cracked.com – Well, some of these are a stretch (like in most of Cracked’s lists), but it’s still some interesting stuff.
