Unblogged Bits (Wed. 26-May-10 2000)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Where Have I Been? Get Your Answer with the Google Location History Dashboard – This is SO INCREDIBLY AWESOMELY COOL. (And also pretty darned scary. But cool!)
  2. Just When I Thought I Was Out… – Heh.
  3. Don’t Fret About It – Ha! I’ll just sit here and watch, man.
  4. Fischer Responds: The Left Is Distoring and Misrepresenting My Statement – Money graf: “Basically, Fischer is saying that Christians need to be bold and decisive and courageous enough that they are willing to kill for God … but that they should never actually kill for God.” Too bad Fischer doesn’t have the courage of his convictions to stand by his own words.
  5. Muslim Americans Under Attack As Far Right Fights To Deny Them From Building Their Own Places Of Worship – Imagine the howls of outrage if these communities were giving Christian churches such a hard time. But, then, we all know that Christianity (at least the right sort) is Good, and Islam is Evil, so it must be okay to block mosque construction.
  6. Republicans discover sarcasm, don’t like it much – It actually is scary that each of those proposals is something that some wingnut might actually suggest, even in jest.
  7. Illinois Gives Money to Christian Group for Cross; Atheist May Sue – Just because it’s a “tourist draw” doesn’t mean the state is justified in giving it money. Duh.
  8. Want More Lead Or Pesticide In Your Body? Try Dietary Supplements – Let’s let the free market work it out! People who take poisonous supplements will all die, and their manufacturers will therefore all go out of business! Problem solved by the free market!
  9. Everybody Draw Holocaust Day! – Freedom of expression includes the freedom to make an ass of yourself. Thank heavens, because none of us would want others going after us with bombs and knives on those occasions when we do, in fact, make asses of ourselves.
  10. Felony Child Porn Charges for Sexting – Felony charges? Really? Jeez.
  11. dwfiction: A Partial Map of Your TARDIS (Subject to Change) – Brilliant.
  12. Facebook Announces Simplified Privacy Settings – Well, it certainly sounds promising(ish).
  13. “I’ll Never Be One of Those Skinny Girls” – Crikey. Sadly, that almost does pass for un-skinny in some fashion circles.
  14. Federal Subsidies vs. Nutritional Recommendations – Interesting pyramids (but distorted graphs, as they seem to be quantifying based on an edge vs the volume represented; they ought to have maintained the same order, too). A third pyramid ought to be actual average consumption.
  15. Rumors and Partisan Politics – It shouldn’t be at all surprising, but it’s interesting to see it actually quantified.
  16. Signs of Summer on the Tube – “Have a magical weekend my lovelies!”
  17. Government approves Ground Zero mosque – So the local folks seem to be okay with it — it’s just the outside pols and punditry that seems aghast at the idea that EVIL GODLESS MUSLIMS might be worshiping somewhere near Ground Zero.
  18. Senate Republicans want special prosecutor – It’s all about politics.
  19. GOP won’t allow ideas to raise taxes on new site, but Hitler references and anti-Hispanic rhetoric are ok. – “We want to year your ideas (if they match our ideas)!”
  20. Whales, Dolphins, and Human Rights : The Thoughtful Animal – “Human rights” for “non-human people” is a fascinating discussion point (and reading some of the dismissive comments of folks who question cetacean intelligence, rightly or wrongly, is evocative of that used to dismiss the humanity of, say, black Africans once upon a time. On the other hand, it’s ever going to be a very hard sell unless we develop a means of communicating with them.
