Unblogged Bits (Wed. 9-Jun-10 0801)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Palin: Don’t ‘drill, baby, drill’ until government stops ‘oily corruption.’ – Wait — Palin is now an anti-Big Oil, pro-environment spokescritter? On what planet?
  2. Schakowsky: Debt Commission Success ‘Unlikely’ Because Conservatives Are ‘Closing The Door’ On Taxes – This is the problem we see in California writ large; despite 50-year lows in tax rates, the GOP will not hear of any tax increases to address the debt, but only reductions in government spending (in everything except Defense). I hope that the US as a whole does not suffer as California has.
  3. Dept. of Unintended Consequences: Hepatitis B in West Virginia [Superbug] – But remember, it’s okay if people just get their care from going to the ER …
  4. MANIFESTO – I am consistently dismayed, even appalled, by the consistent drum on the Internet to brand, brand, brand. Too much of commentary on developing good web pages is focused on branding, on SEO optimization, on selling yourself as a product. Maureen’s manifesto about how people matter, and how the Internet is not about proclaiming a brand but about engaging in a dialog, is one I’d love to see broader dissemination.
  5. Stop or speed through a yellow light? That is the question – Perhaps I was traumatized by a too-abrupt hard application of brakes at a yellow light when I was first learning; if I cross into the intersection before it turns red, I consider it okay — or at least more safe than slamming on the brakes.
