Unblogged Bits (Mon. 2-Aug-10 2000)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Credit scoring and unemployment – As a hiring manager, I can’t reasonably think of a serious justification for running a credit check on a potential employee, especially in this economy. I’m trying to think of a job where it would be of even minor value.
  2. Justin Berrier: Fox now pitting NYC mosque against completely unrelated church – Remarkable how folks supposedly touting Christianity over all others are so repeatedly truth-challenged.
  3. Tetris effect – Yeah, that’s been known to happen … (with games, particular TV shows …)
  4. A Follow-Up to a Phony Story – Nice.
  5. Spirit CEO: Carry-On Fees Are A “Consumer Benefit” – “It lets consumers decide what is important to them rather than the airline presuming what’s important to them… Imagine if you went to McDonald’s and the only things you could buy were the value meals…” No, it’s more like imagine if you went to McDonald’s and they charged you for the cup, the lid, the straw, the napkins, the tray, the ice …
  6. Maybe the free market can protect miners, too – “More to the point, Paul is running on a platform of ignorance — he’s not qualified to shape federal policy, so send him to Washington, where federal policy is written, so he can avoid shaping federal policy.” Plus note the lovely let-them-eat-cake of Paul’s “You’d try to make good rules to protect your people here. If you don’t, I’m thinking that no one will apply for those jobs.” That’s the anti-government GOP for you — assuming an infinite flexibility to job-hop until you find a job that doesn’t maim or kill you.
  7. More spectacular Retrographs from World War II…: The Retronaut
  8. PowerPad Uses Used Shower Water to Help Your Water Heater Stay Efficient [Green Tech] – Clever.
  9. Amazon Offers To Connect With Your Facebook Account – No. Thank. You. I love Amazon. I have no desire to get it mixed and mingled with Facebook.
  10. Texas mosque and educational center vandalized with offensive graffiti and fire, causing $20,000 in damage. – Because Jesus was all about vandalism and arson, right?
  11. The Guy Who’s Always in the Background on TV – There he is again …
  12. Batman Married Wonder Woman – Not something I’d ever do, but I so glad there are folks who would.
  13. What If We Feared EVERYTHING The Way We Fear Predators? – Risk assessment and management are key life skills. I worry that by over-sheltering our kids in so many ways (and demonstrating poor levels of both those skills), we’re raising generations now that will be even worse at it.
  14. Rove Invents Fantasy World In Which The Bush Tax Cuts Led To The Most Government Revenue Ever – But if he repeats it enough times, people will believe it.
  15. Polls, Reporting on “Ground Zero Mosque” May Mislead – More perspective, as well as an even better map.
  16. A Street-Level View of the “Ground Zero Mosque” – “There’s pretty much no way that you’re going to be able to see a 12-story building located two blocks behind a 16-story building that occupies the entire block, with another ~14-story building wedged in between.” Another worthy takedown of the image of some domed-and-minaretted tower of doom looming over the GZ site. That said, we can easily take this argument too far — we can argue that it’s not a problem because the image that’s been presented is not what it actually is, but we don’t want to then be arguing that the Cordoba House is okay ONLY because it’s not at Ground Zero or a minaretted mosque. That’s like saying, “Hey, don’t worry, we can let these blacks move into the neighborhood because, well, they’re not living on Main Street so nobody will have to see them.”
  17. 20 Secrets Your Waiter Won’t Tell You – This has a fair amount of overlap from the list I did the other day, but a few extra items as well.
