Unblogged Bits (Tue. 12-Oct-10 1131)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. ‘Dingo Ate My Baby’ Case Reopened : Discovery News
  2. UK government ready to abolish consumer protection agencies as “waste” – Boing Boing – I’m sure there are plenty of Republicans who’d love to abolish the Consumer Protection Agency, et al.
  3. Apple trademarks “There’s an app for that” – (Rolls eyes …)
  4. Amazing new artificial reef in Mexico made from sculptures of real people | Mail Online – Very cool.
  5. And baby comes too… But watch out – restaurant high chairs harbour more bacteria than the average toilet seat | Mail Online – One more UNCLEAN! thing to worry about …
  6. 10 things you didn’t know about The Empire Strikes Back – Might need to add this one to the wish list …
  7. Matt Gertz: Fox promo: We’re “solving America’s problems,” which include gov’t “killing the Constitution” – Yeeeesh.
  8. Ken Buck’s callousness: Steve Benen
  9. McCain Tells Tea Partiers: GOP Is ‘Party Of Hell No’ And Fox News Is ‘The Best Place To Get Your News’ – Obstructionism and lucrative propaganda — the face of Today’s GOP.
  10. Outrage of the Week: Today Show’s Crazy Halloween Advice – I don't recall when John & I got to solo trick-or-treating. I actually don't mind going along with Kay and whomever she hooks up with in the neighborhood — it's fun, and relaxing, and someone up the street offers all the adults beers, and it's easier than hanging out, waiting for the doorbell to ring.
  11. Age Maps – Intriguing. And creepy.
  12. WizardRSS Coverts Any Partial RSS Feed to a Full Feed – Outstanding. I’ve tried this on a couple of sites, and it seems to usually work. The fact is, I have so (too) much that I follow that a partial RSS is much more likely to mean I never read a site than that I click through to the actual page.
  13. Serial divorcé, and adulterer, Newt Gingrich goes birther – Nice “blame the victim” move, Newt.
  14. CO-Sen: Buck’s growing problem with women – Stay classy, Ken!
  15. Republicans: “We Miss Bill Clinton” – So, will Obama be similarly “rehabilitated” by revisionist memory in a decade or two? Or will he forever be That Crypto-Muslim Atheist Kenyan Elitist Socialist Death-Panelist?
  16. In a mobile-banking world, whither the paper check? – We write a handful of paper checks a month — usually for transactions at the house, or with the school, that don’t lend themselves to credit cards. But 99% of the bills I pay are electronic transfers (or PayTrust prints the check for me).
  17. United Airlines: Hurry, Only 4 Seats Left? – “As you can see, no matter what flight combination was chosen, whether it be six in the morning or nine at night, ‘only’ four seats were left on EVERY flight in either direction. Coincidence? I think not. It looks like United is using a bit of a scare tactic, not unlike that used by timeshare hucksters — ‘this deal is available today only, if you delay, you will miss out’.” United keeps getting more and more classy.
  18. The Story Behind Warner Bros’ Failed 3D Plans For ‘Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1′ – It sounds like WB did the right thing here. I suspect we’ll see a 3D re-release shortly before Part 2 comes out.

  1. RE: 10. In 4th grade, at both houses, I was allowed to go out with friends until 9ish…but it was usually so miseraable out that were back home long before then.
