Unblogged Bits (Fri. 12-Nov-10 1030)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. The woman you’d love your woman to be like – Holy Kaw! – Clever? Exploitative? Hmmm. Might have to watch a few more times to be sure …
  2. San Diego Comic-Con Convention Center Expansion Includes Rooftop Park – ComicsAlliance | Comics culture, news, humor, commentary, and reviews
  3. The Strange World of Superhero Twitter Action Role Playing – ComicsAlliance | Comics culture, news, humor, commentary, and reviews – Strange and fun.
  4. The Hijacked Commission – NYTimes.com – “So how, exactly, did a deficit-cutting commission become a commission whose first priority is cutting tax rates, with deficit reduction literally at the bottom of the list? Actually, though, what the co-chairmen are proposing is a mixture of tax cuts and tax increases — tax cuts for the wealthy, tax increases for the middle class. They suggest eliminating tax breaks that, whatever you think of them, matter a lot to middle-class Americans — the deductibility of health benefits and mortgage interest — and using much of the revenue gained thereby, not to reduce the deficit, but to allow sharp reductions in both the top marginal tax rate and in the corporate tax rate.”
  5. Pilsudski 1910 1920 LOC hec 14263 restored.jpg [POTD for November 11 from commons.wikimedia.org] – The father of modern Polish independence (1918). He looks like he’d be a mean SOB even without that awesome mustache.
  6. NaNoWriMo takes Stanford by storm – Wow. Okay, I would have SO loved to have had the excuse of class credit to do NaNoWriMo. (And it’s a great idea, too.)
  7. Google Doodle Controversy: An Islamic Crescent Moon Hidden In Vet Doodle? – Techland – TIME.com – Sometimes I think the whole world has gone mad.
  8. Asia Bibi, Pakistan Blasphemy Case Defendant, Death Sentence Handed Down – I object to and condemn any criminal sentence for blasphemy. Such laws only make the state a thug on behalf of a deity (or prophet) who, if their message is true, need no earthly protection.
  9. If You Begin a Sentence with Well, There’s a Good Chance You’re Lying [Lying] – Okay now I need to start listening for this.
  10. Utah Filming Dates Confirmed – Must be a fake! Nobody official would ever abbreviate it “Dr.”!

  1. 1. Exploitative? No more so than the commercial it’s parodying, methinks.

    2. A park? No, no, no! Avengers and JLA HQs? That’s the way to go!

    3. Umm… Yeah. I dunno…

    7. And look! The Os have two crescents joined, illustrating a world ruled by Islam! Plus the Os stand for Obama! Twice!

    9. Well, I would not say that “giv[ing] you an answer that they know you are not expecting” is the same as lying. In fact, I tend to use it when I am giving thought to my answer. More of a “Well… no” type of response.

    10. I usually call him “Doc Who.” That’s acceptable, right? (Answers beginning with “Well” are disallowed).
