A bright, shiny, new Green Lantern trailer is out.
There’s a lot of good here — the fist, and pretty much all the green energy bits (and, if I haven’t mentioned it before, kudos to WB for being willing to have their logo thematically screwed around with in movies). The aliens look pretty good, too — Abin Sur, Sinestro, Tomar Re, Kilowog … The suit isn’t great, but it’s not bad, either.
But beyond the shiny, I have my doubts. So Hal isn’t “without fear”? That’s a fairly significant departure. But it’s in keeping with what looks like is the weakest part of the film (to judge, possibly unfairly, by the trailer): Hal is kind of a sketchy jerk here.
Now, Hal Jordan being a jerk isn’t new. He’s often been a stick-up-ass jerk (since the Denny O’Neil days, at least). And in the “Emerald Dawn” miniseries, he’s not particularly colored in pre-ring glory. Still, what little I’ve seen of Ryan Reynolds’ performance here as Hal the Slacker doesn’t impress me.

I recorded this and watched it last night. The suit is a little more tolerable than it was in the stills I saw. I too felt that Hal was a bit too much of a jerk (were they influenced by the movie version of Tony Stark?). And of course, the ring is supposed to seek out the nearest person who is fearless; I guess they changed it for dramatic reasons. And, of course, I hate the music.
Was that Hector Hammond we saw briefly a couple of times?
Yup. Not quite sure why, with a Truly Cosmic Hero (though, honestly, isn’t “Protect the Universe” hyperbole?), we end up fighting an Earth guy with mental powers.
Re: Fearless.
Well, the Hal in this movie looks to be a Test Pilot…so, you have to have some insane level of fearlessness for that. I guess I see it as more of a self-awareness/heroic plot device thing. He may be fearless as a test pilot, or in some of his other personal life aspects, but now, now he has to be heroic, and that is a whole other kettle of fish since that implies responsibility, which it looks like This Hal seems to have an issue with (based solely on the trailer scenes). He may be absolutely fearless, and that may be what the ring sought out, but he is not, nor has ever been responsible for others, for the world, for the universe….and now he has self-doubts and knows fear because of all of that responsibility.
If that is the way they are going to go, it could be a real interesting character journey.
