Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….
- President Obama Pledges To Loosen Regulations… Or Does He?: Stuart Shapiro
- Tom Tancredo returning to GOP after failed bid for governor – Boulder Daily Camera – So Tancredo is openly “opportunistic” (his word) and has no “allegiance” to the party. And, remarkably, some in the GOP will welcome him back with open arms.
- Do you have a ‘right’ to a job, home, or health care? – Actually, I agree with the premise of the article — we throw around the term “rights” too loosely. But I believe our society (as instantiated by our government, which is us) have a responsibility to make sure that all people are fed, sheltered, and cared for (at least to the point of not dying from neglect). That may irk those who take the “I got mine, you go screw,” but that’s what I believe.
- FCC Approves Comcast/NBC Universal Merger – Apparently there are some provisions to mitigate some potential problems, but those sorts of things not only just beg for being worked around, they rapidly grow stale and fail to protect against UNanticipated problems. I think this will make only the NBC and Comcast shareholders happy, short- and long-term.
- Wolves – Heh.
- Tron: Ancestry T-Shirt – That is quite spiffy.
- New report finds 129 million Americans under 65 have a pre-existing condition – “So, this week, the GOPers are taking on 129 million Americans under 65 and their families. That sounds like it should be, using the GOP’s terminology, a political job-killer.”
- It’s so easy to make him mad! – The idea that “They disagree with me, therefore they are The Enemy” is, alas, a longstanding tradition amongst the religious conservative set in this country. Facts have nothing to do with it — it’s all “you’re either with us, or you’re against us” … hmmm, where have I heard that before?
- Robert Downey, Jr. Voicing Mr. Peabody in DreamWorks’ ‘Peabody and Sherman’ – I would so dearly love this to be wonderful. I find myself dubious.
- Creep Used Women’s Facebook Info to Hack E-Mail Accounts and Steal Nude Pics [Crime] – Just another cautionary tale of what sort of data you should (and shouldn’t) include on Facebook. I mean, really. And the whole strong passwords / security questions thing, too.
- It Is Illegal To Shoot Pigs Over The Internet With Robot Shotguns [DIY] – The whole concept here is … deeply disturbing.
- ‘Breaking In’ the Baby – Of course, if the baby were suspected to be an Islamic terrorist, some folks call it “enhanced interrogation” and would say this is perfectly acceptable. Which is perfectly unacceptable.
- Facebook thinks twice on giving dev access to phone, address data – For the moment, at least.
- Vatican Warned Irish Bishops Not To Report Abuse : NPR – Y’know, there are possible aspects to this I can understand and even sympathize with (the issues around sanctity of the confessional, for example). That said, these top-down command-and-control documents always seem to come off way less as having concerned conflicts over moral issues and way more as mandating cover-ups, message-spinning, and stonewalling. Which is just plain despicable.
- Starbucks Drops A 31-Ounce Bomb: The Trenta – I can see getting a really big iced drink on a very hot day — I mean, this is basically Starbucks hopping on the aged “thirsty-two ouncer” bandwagon. Don’t see it, though for my morning cup o’ joe.
