Unblogged Bits (Mon. 14-Feb-11 1030)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Permission to Work: The Government Database That May Stand Between You and Your Next Job – E-Verify is a great example of what’s wrong with the quick, easy, “let’s just build a database” solution to problems. Government databases are inevitably filled with errors — and rarely are there effective ways of correcting those errors. We’ve seen it with travel security lists, and E-Verify is little different, except it’s keeping people from getting jobs.
  2. A little knowledge goes a long way: Steve Benen
  3. Despite Earmark Ban, Boehner Brings Home Pork-Barrel Defense Project That Pentagon Doesn’t Want: Zaid Jilani
  4. Tangled’s Secret Box Office Weapon – I don’t buy it.
  5. Telegraph: Mubarak used last 18 days to secure his fortune – Well, of course. But, then, if he’s out, that’s a big boon ongoing. And the money can be pursued …
  6. Alaska warming at three times the rate of the lower 48 – It’s not real! And if it’s real, it’s not man-made! And if it’s man-made it would be too unprofitable to do anything about it!
  7. Shirley Sherrod suing Andrew Breitbart – Law suits against political commentators is certainly something that I’d be very cautious about. On the other hand, Breitbart offered his info as fact, not opinion. It was not. And it was clearly defamatory.
  8. We Love Our Government Spending – “Once you start to talk specifics, the public’s aversion to government spending rapidly evaporates.” The public needs to make its feelings known here. The general sense of “we need cuts” is getting down to the brass tacks of “what are we going to cut.” If people don’t want to see certain things cut, they need to provide that feedback loud and clear (and even then it may be too late).
  9. Homeopathy Overdose Befuddles Homeopaths – Homeopathy is a scam, or at least no more scientifically based than faith healing. It’s harmless … save for the money people waste on it and the harm done by people not actually getting effective treatment for their diseases.
  10. A simple question that deserved a simple answer – Certainly politicians don’t have the responsibility to tell people what to think (though politicians of all stripes frequently do just that). But this is just weasel-words from Boehner. We all, especially our leaders, have a responsibility to the truth, and to speak out when harmful falsehoods are being spread.
  11. Everyone wins! – This makes so much sense. Making material available for free gives exposure that promotes actual commercial purchase, and keeps the material fresh and in the public view.
