Unblogged Bits (Mon. 28-Mar-11 1130)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Microsoft asks state lawmakers to make domestic companies pay for foreign firms’ software piracy – Really? Going after American companies that receive parts, raw materials, or products for resale from overseas countries that use pirated software? Sounds like a great way to further destroy American business, Microsoft. I’m not a big software piracy advocate, but I suspect that even MS might find itself in the crosshairs for this sort of action.
  2. “Chinese Professor” and political button-pushing – Wow. Ringing all the Yellow Peril / Obamacare / Tax&Spend propaganda buttons on this one, under the cover of "citizens" against "government waste."
  3. Who’s the Biggest Loser in E-Books? – Which is interesting when combined with higher-than-hardcover prices for (at least some) ebooks.
  4. Five myths about why the South seceded – The Washington Post – Some good nuggets here.
  5. Is lying protected speech? Military-medal case is on track for Supreme Court – The Washington Post – I hate seeing any speech unprotected, without extremely good and clear-cut reasons for it. On the other hand, lying about military service and citations is despicable, and ought to be subject to some punishment other than social opprobrium. But, then, where do you draw the line as to which despicable lies are or aren’t protected? Hmmm.
  6. How not to negotiate, 101 – It’s almost as if the Democratic leadership really don’t want to push back on the GOP budget cuts.
  7. Pictionary – Yup.
  8. Hark! – Zits for 3/27/2011 – Why it’s just as well I don’t carry one.
  9. GOP’s Radical Breakage Continues – Stay classy, Wisconsin GOP!
  10. How quickly they forget – On the Affordable Care Act: “In other words, Brit Hume has it exactly backwards. He argued yesterday that the whole effort would have gone so much better if only Dems had been willing to compromise and embrace Republican goals. Except, in Grown Up Land, that’s exactly what happened, and Republicans refused to take ‘Yes’ for an answer.”
  11. Islamic bloc drops 12-year U.N. drive to ban defamation of religion | FaithWorld | Analysis & Opinion | Reuters.com – That is some progress. However, it’s worth noting that there have been plenty of Christian organizations that have supported the old “defamation” drive, explicitly or tacitly, hoping for state protection against defamation of their own faith. This is not just a “Muslim” thing.
