Unblogged Bits (Mon. 28-Mar-11 1730)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Profits at gas pump sputter for many Colorado retailers – The Denver Post – I’ll confess (if confession is needed) that I buy almost all my gas from the local Safeway station, usually at a tidy discount based on grocery purchases.
  2. Watch the “Invader ZIM” Cast Reading Unproduced Scripts – Fun.
  3. DC Women Kicking Ass – Adam Hughes cover for Action 900 – Nice.
  4. Gunning for AARP – Stay classy, GOP!
  5. Batman: The Brave and The Bold gives us total Superman meme insanity – We had much fun watching this over the weekend. I still prefer (and we watched some of that, too), BTAS more serious take on Bats and the DCU, but the zany Silver Age charm of BTBatB has been a hoot.
  6. Santorum: It Is Our “Obligation” to Make Our Civil Laws “Comport With God’s Laws” – Comportment of civil law with God’s law for me, but not for thee!
  7. Barber: Suicide Rate High Among Gay Youth Because They Know “What They Are Doing Is Unnatural, Is Wrong, Is Immoral” – Sorry, it’s hard to take anyone seriously who throws around terms like “Alinsky-style, homo-fascist tactics.”
  8. Global Corruption Index – As my company goes more global, this is something we pay a lot of attention to (in a “how are we going to avoid this” kind of way).
  9. Colorado schools are beginning to write off cursive handwriting – The Denver Post – While I’m enough of a traditionalist to still want to see cursive taught, I do think (sadly enough) the time would be better spent with more thorough keyboarding skills.
  10. Go-slow approach would still fast-track some metro Denver commuter rail development – The Denver Post – FasTracks is a fascinating program to watch. I do hope that the surrounding communities buy into the project expansion (for everyone’s benefit, not least of all their own). [Obligatory Disclosure: my employer is involved in FasTracks work.]
  11. All signs point to dimming of Qwest name in Denver – The Denver Post – I remember when the sign was first put up and intentionally designed to be so bright it would be visible for many, many miles.
  12. New Florida Law Ties Teachers Pay To Student Performance – So where will teachers be incented to teach? At schools with plenty of resources, involved parents, and few social problems. Which is, remarkably, just the schools that don’t need to be helped.
