Unblogged Bits (Wed. 6-Apr-11 1730)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. Look at This Guy – Yup.
  2. Boehner’s Latest Budget Proposal Bans Abortion Funding In D.C. – Stay classy, John! (Oh, and, btw, if you’re really serious about this whole “negotiating in good faith” thing, then your CRs should not contain added, unnegotiated cuts, nor stuff like this that has nothing to do with federal spending. Just saying.)
  3. Gov. Scott Walker Chose Top Donor’s 26-Year-Old Dropout Son Over PhD And Engineer – Stay class, Scott!
  4. Fisher Goes Too Far: Blog Post Changed to Remove “Rut Like Rabbits” Comment – Stay classy, Bryan!
  5. Gendered Language in TV Toy Commercials (UPDATE) – Except for some toys and games geared to pre-school age kids, the majority of toys advertised on kid TV tend to be very much for one gender or another, with differences as shown here. (On the other hand, it’s not just because she’s a girl that my daughter — and I — laugh at the insanely stupid Beyblade commercials).
  6. Who’s Misery?: White Privilege in Stockton, CA – There are none so blind as those who will not see.
  7. 8-year-old pepper sprayed after threatening police with a sharp stick. – My initial reaction on reading the headline about this story the past couple of days was that it was a classic example of police overreaction. Having read various accounts now, it sounds like this is a kid with a very serious problem (who’s not getting the help he needs from his parents).
  8. Right-Wing Continues To Panic Over Repeal Of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, Warns It Will “Destroy Our Military” – Are US Army Chaplains allowed to preach to the troops that Jews are evil and cursed for killing Jesus Christ? That’s a “Biblical belief” held by some. Are they allowed to preach that women ought not to be in the Army? That’s also “Biblical” by some lights. How about preaching regarding Blacks and Whites not mixing, which some have claimed is “Biblical”? If that sort of preaching is allowed, then I suspect there will not be restrictions on US Army Chaplains being able to speak their mind on homosexuality (as they choose to do so). If not, then it’s not like this is any new, grand loss of freedom. Except, of course, this time it’s about TEH GAYZ!
  9. Sorry Newt Gingrich, but the American Family Association IS a hate group – Newt (like Bryan) is a dolt: having a “Christian based membership” that is “widespread” and that doesn’t “think of themselves as a hate group” would describe the KKK, too.
  10. How to Detect a Geek [Cartoon] – HA!
  11. The Biggest Lie of All Time [Pic] – Yup.
  12. An ingenious application of crowdsourcing: Fix reviews grammar, improve sales – As someone who deals with communication on a regular basis — in email, on the phone, in interviews, etc. — I can guarantee you that grammar (and spelling) matter.
  13. Who’s hurt by Paul Ryan’s budget proposal – The Washington Post – A lot of nice turns of phrase here, but here’s my favorite: “If it does nothing else, the budget that House Republicans unveiled Tuesday provides the first real Republican program for the 21st century, and it is this: Repeal the 20th century.”
  14. John Boehner Admits Democrats “Win” In Government Shutdown – There’s certainly an argument to be made there because, ultimately, what torques off the populace is the automatic government service cuts a shutdown creates — and government service cuts are always associated with the GOP. Which makes you wonder, once more, why the Dems have been negotiating by giving the GOP pretty much whatever they want.
  15. ACLU Suggets Women Incorporate Their Uteruses – If corporations can be people, why can’t people be corporations?
  16. High priests and warriors leading us into the dark – “The fantasy that the Great and Heroic Paul Ryan relies upon is that ‘the market’ will be so full of competition that it will magically keep prices low and profits high and everyone will live happily ever after in a capitalist nirvana. Unfortunately, the insurance industry has already proven that it doesn’t respond to normal market forces and there’s no reason to believe that it will in the future.” It didn’t work before, but, by gosh, there’s lots of money to be made discovering it won’t work again (for certain “people dying because they can’t afford treatment” values of “won’t work”).
  17. Bristol Palin Responds: Legally Required Nonprofit Disclosure Part Of An Anti-Palin Conspiracy – Victim! I’m a victim! I’m a (highly-compensated) victim!
  18. Where Should the US Store Its Nuclear Waste? [Science] – The ultimate answer from Congress seems to be “Anywhere but in my state (including passage through same”). That sentiment seems to apply to the Congresscritters who are pushing nuclear power, too.
  19. As schools shift to Google Apps, blind students object – An interesting set of problems — and a really interesting set of comments following (good, bad, and ugly).

  1. And, finally, there’s talk that we have a president who’s a Democrat — the party that created the American social contract of the 20th century. Initially, he focused on reshaping and extending that contract into the 21st. Now that the Republicans want to repeal it all, he’s nowhere to be found. Has anybody seen him? Does he still exist?

That’s my favorite line from the WA Post article on the Ryan budget.
