Thought for Today: Monarchy

Of the various forms of government which have prevailed in the world, an hereditary monarchy seems to present the fairest scope for ridicule.

Edward Gibbon (1737-1794) English historian
The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, ch. 7 (1776-88)

I mean, if heredity were all that perfect of a system, one would expect the Brits to be ruled by a race of super-geniuses by now, right?

Actually, in all seriousness, congratulations to the happy couple.  While they obviously have a lot of advantages going into a marriage, they also have a lot of challenges, so my heartiest felicitations to them both.

  1. Oy, thats my (very distant) cousins you are talking about! Both are decended from notorious Parlimentary commander ‘Black’ Tom Fairfax, and I have a line of decent from his grandfather.

No I didn’t get an invite.

I mean, if democracy were all that perfect of a system, one would expect the Yanks to be ruled by a race of super-geniuses by now, right? Rather than poor people continually vote against their own self interests to make the rich richer.
