Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….
- Safety blitz at WV Massey Energy mine, 20 instances of aggravated misconduct [The Pump Handle] – Who needs all that profit-consuming regulation?! If the miners discover the mine is deadly dangerous, our capitalist free market system should allow them to just quit and find work at another mine, right?!
- E-Readers Fail At Education | Fast Company – Actually, I think most of what’s said here is correct. A Kindle would be awful to take extensive notes on (vs a textbook), and you do lose that “I’m sure it was on a page with this kind of picture in the lower left-hand corner” tracking (though in that way it might be more like scrolls were than books). Heck, I’ve already noticed that a Kindle makes every book look-and-feel the same, which is also a cognitive mapping issue for recall. We were thinking of how a Kindle might be of use to Kay in coming school years, but this gives me a certain amount of pause.
- The REAL Death Of The Music Industry – I think it’s kind of a shame that singles are supplanting albums. Sure, it’s an obvious offshoot of the digital age (where it’s just as easy to buy one as the other), but I found a lot of my favorite songs were not the “A-list” tracks that might have originally attracted me to an album, but the less known works.
- Salt: Not So Bad After All? – I will confess that I am a lover of salt. Moderation in all things, people.
- Hummingbird-Sized Ant Fossil Discovered in Wyoming – Cue the Zanti Misfits …
- Teacher Suspended for Mocking Muslim Student After Bin Laden’s Death – Asshat.
- Osama Code Name ‘Geronimo’ Angers Native American Leaders – Hmmm. My initial thought was that, as a long-hunted guerrilla leader, it wasn’t a bad code name (though “Mr. Fluffypants” would have been a fine idea, too). I can see why some Native Americans might object — though the idea that the names are now somehow inextricably linked is unlikely unless they continue to raise a stink about it.
- Palin: Obama ‘Pussy-Footing’ By Not Releasing Photo Of Dead Bin Laden | TPMDC – The photo would hardly put deniers claims to rest. Whereas a photo becomes and icon for martyrdom. I think this is the right decision — and not just because Ms Palin disagrees with it.
- Is It Legal For The U.S. To Release Pictures Of Bin Laden’s Body? – Short answer: apparently so. Which doesn’t make it right, or wise.

4. Well, having seen “The Man Trap” about 117 times, I know that you will die without enough salt in your system, so I keep my intake way up just to be safe.
5. At least it’s not “Them!”
8. Palin thinks that killing a terrorist leader is less intimidating that publishing a picture of his body? Umm… OK. Incidentally, I think that releasing the photo would be politicking and drama in itself, as was her public reaction (hooray for hypocrisy!).
