Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….
- Smart Design: Switch Plug Saves Power [PICS] – Makes huge sense to me.
- Officer Safety: Radley Balko
- Your Church Can Do Whatever The Hell It Wants – Yes. We have a solidly civil foundation to marriage as a civic contract (justices of the peace and court clerks and Elvis impersonators with the right license can perform it), and a religious foundation to marriage (church sacraments that mean different things to different faiths). Why these two get conflated — or why the latter should dictate who should get the former, or why the former should influence a particular denomination’s practice of the latter — defies reason.
- Conservative Lies About Human Nature – “A moral imperative for the pursuit of wealth and power, whatever the consequences for the many and for society at large. That was the goal of the confidence men who sold us a false and destructive view of our own natures. So successful were they that many progressives (and most Democrats) remain content to operate within the frames and narratives generated by the scam.” It’s particularly ironic that so many of the folks taken in by this meme (and its candidates) consider themselves Christian.
- As world diabetes rate doubles, Wal-Mart and K-Mart raise diabetes drug costs: Chris in Paris
- World’s Whinest: Scott Kurtz
- Mitch McConnell’s Lie Goes Unchallenged – “It’s time for Republicans to grow up and act like adults instead of petulant spoiled children.” Why? It’s not like it costs them votes or gets them uninvited from Sunday news shows or anything.
- Why Google Health Really Failed—It’s About The Money – This one’s for Margie.
- TSA forces 95 year old, dying woman to remove adult diaper: Chris in Paris
- WND Writer Wants Marriage Equality Supporters Tried And Punished – “The civil government has no authority in area of the free exercise of religion such as marriage. If it has no authority and tries to exercise power not vested to it, then the state is acting illegally.” This is an insane statement in this context in about four or five different directions. Which I should hardly be surprised about.
- Global Warming Is Eliminating Joshua Trees From Joshua Tree National Park: Brad Johnson
- GOP Whip McCarthy: Oil Subsidies Off The Table In Debt Talks, But Medicare Cuts Have To Be Part Of The Deal – Apparently everything is off the table that the GOP wants to be off the table. Which makes one wonder what the hell is being actually “negotiated”?

- Christie: Supporting Public Media Is Communism, But A $400 Million Bailout Of A Huge Corporate Mall Is A ‘Great Idea’ – Best government money can buy!
- Retiree Loses Everything After Bank Forecloses On Wrong House – The profit must flow …
- EFF’s 21st Century bust-cards – Making a note to keep a copy of this with me.
- Advice Goddess: How much longer must we be subjected to invasive TSA patdowns? – My favorite comment: “Are the TSA agents subjected to that search? If not, they should be. What if they’re an infilitrator, or sympathizer? that’s too sensitive a position, they must be probed in the same manner they want to probe us. Every time they come on shift.”
- Cable Boxes Slurp More Electricity Than Refrigerators – Although the cable box shown is, in fact, a DVR unit as well, which isn’t nearly as useful when, well, turned off.
- With ‘Brave,’ Pixar Gives a Girl the Lead – Very cool.
- CHART: States That Cut The Most Spending Have Lost The Most Jobs – To be fair, correlation is not causality. It’s equally plausible that countries with worse economic situations (which will continue to lose jobs) will be desperate enough to fall for GOP austerity measure promises that not only don’t help, but hurt the people whose jobs are then lost.
