Pondering Google+

Google+! It’s a floor wax! It’s a dessert topping! It’s the greatest thing since Facebook, but its not evil!

Um …

So I’ve signed up with the Google+ gamma test (y’know, it’s like a beta test, only in production). And it’s very cool in terms of being a hell of a lot like Facebook but without the evil taint of Facebook. Plus, it’s Google, so it has more white space. And there’s no Farmville. And it’s more closely integrated to my Google account structure. And it does the instant picture upload. And it has better “friends” groupings in Circles. And it seems that all the Cool Kids are doing it.

But …

Okay, I’m a lazy bastard. Or, if you will, efficient. I have only so many hours in the day that I can be doing social media and pontificating before the masses and seeing what all my friends and acquaintances are doing on the Internet. And I have fewer hours than that in which I should be doing that.

So here’s the problem.

Right now I have this elaborate web of feeds and links and redirects and so forth. So stuff that I put into Twitter ends up digested on my blog, and stuff that I do Google Reader shares on, likewise (through the Unblogged Bits). And, similarly, things that I blog get Tweets generated of them, as well as RSS feeds. And, through various mechanisms, the Tweets and blog entries and the like also get routed to Facebook (from which nothing comes, because it is, after all, the Land of Mordor, where the Shadows Lie).

So what I want to see are ways to have my blog entries create notes into Google+. I want Google+ entries echoed back into my blog. I want Tweets to create Google+ entries, or vice-versa. I want it so that when I say something, anywhere in my Social Media Empire, then it’s visible everywhere in my Social Media Empire. Because I am, as I said, lazy/efficient.

And, ultimately, my blog is my social medium of record. Love you, Google, but not even you get to surpass that. So I do expect that, ultimately, it should all come back there.

And if it can’t?

Well, there’s a variety of reasons why I spend minimal time on Facebook. That’s one of the biggies.

My blog is my home.  I have room for one place to spend most of my time hanging out when I’m not at home, and Google+ seems like it could be a great place for that … but not yet.

So go ahead, Google. It’s your move. Still.
