***Dave Does the Comics – Issue 1

Hey, Kids! Comics!

I finally got around to doing the inaugural DDtC podcast this afternoon. You can get to it through this link, or use the little player at the bottom of the post.

Comics reviewed include:

  • Captain America #1 (Marvel – Brubaker / McNiven
  • FF #6 (Marvel – Hickman / Tochini)
  • X-Men: Schism #1 of 5 (Marvel – Aaron / Pacheco)
  • Green Lantern #67 (DC – Johns / Mahnke)
  • Journey into Mystery #625 (Marvel – Gillen / Braithwaite)
  • Mystery Men #3 of 5 (Marvel – Liss / Zircher)
  • Teen Titans #97 (DC – Krul / Scott)
  • Ka-Zar #2 of 5 (Marvel – Jenkins / Alixe)
  • Superman #713 (DC – Straczinski, Roberson / various)
  • Fear Itself #4 of 7 (Marvel – Fraction / Immonen)
  • New Avengers #14 (Marvel – Bendis / Deodato)
  • Birds of Prey #14 (DC – Andreyko / Tucci)
  • DC Universe Online Legends #11 (DC – Wolfman / Miller)
  • Defenders – Marvel Vault One-Shot (Busiek, Nicieza / Bagley)
  • Avengers Assembled Vol. 1 (Busiek / Perez)

As an inaugural effort, it took me about 4 hours to do it all (for a 15 minute podcast), which is far too long to sustain … but a big amount of that was learning curve: getting used to Audacity, figuring out how to mix in the music I’d selected (not sure I’m doing that in the most efficient fashion), figuring out how to edit out some gaps, figuring out how to export and the tags to use, playing around with PowerPress, etc.

I also did a lot of prep on the material, not sure I’d be able to do it off the cuff for 15 minutes. As it turned out, I blssted through the prepped stuff in 10 minutes, leaving me to vamp with some other comics I’d pulled (fortunately!) for another 4.

I’m pretty sure I can cut the prep down substantially in the future, if I continue.

But, then, the question is:   should I continue?  What sayest thou, readers?

(Feedback both on the content and on the podcast tech/process/product itself welcome.)

  1. Very clear and easy to listen to – loved the bumper music (that is what it’s called, right?) Did have a question on if the Superman issue recommended for kids was a stand-alone. Very good “bite-sized” reviews – I’d have to hear a few for a series before I’d add it to my subscriptions, but I use your graphic novel recommendations generally as a good part of my wish list anyway. Will pass it on.

  2. Thanks. I put an inordinate amount of time into figuring out the bumper music (acquiring, including, moving around, fading, etc.), so it’s good to hear it was appreciated.

The Supes issue is part of a year-long arc, but I think it can stand pretty well on its own.

  3. So I’ve gotten some pretty positive feedback about the podcast, which is nice. I will probably continue with it (as well as update the structure in which it’s contained — have its own page, a Subscribe button, get it hooked up into iTunes, etc.).

  4. I look forward to hearing this weekly. It was very professional and well worth listening to. As always, your comments are cogent and insightful.

My only complaint is that you didn’t mention my letter in your review of Birds of Prey #14!
    😉

  5. Not issue covers! With variants, that way lies madness! (teasing) (Sorry, there’s one series a friend buys that she has to pore over the variant covers to decide which she’s buying. Given the story, I know it has to be bought just for the art… but I’ve seen issues with 5, sometimes even 6 variant covers!)
