- Fischer: Gay Rights And Religious Liberty Cannot Coexist – By Fischer’s argument, if I believe (for “religious” reasons) that the races should not mix, I should have the right to turn away people based on their race, too — otherwise, my religious freedom is being quashed. Ditto if I think that Catholics are evil Papists out to take over the world, and refuse to serve them, either. To which I say, bullshit.
- Ships Scrapped – Actually, I disagree with the whole tone of the article. The ships were never finished because the suppliers (shipyards) couldn’t hack the work (financially or quality-wise), which is an indictment of the contract awards system. However, they are single-hull tankers, and the Navy has (arguably correctly) decided that’s too environmentally dangerous. Now, what would be a shame is if the Navy didn’t pull the plug on these, even if they decided they didn’t need them right now, and kept on throwing still more money after them. Should the plugs have been pulled sooner? Probably. But give them credit for doing so eventually.
- House Republicans May Shutdown The FAA Over Anti-Union Demand – These guys seem to get a kick out of breaking the country (or threatening to). Asshats.
- In praise of Joanne Rowling’s Hermione Granger series – Very fun. I’d read that series, too.
- “Eat your peas, Gregor” – Mendel was an interesting fellow. He wasn’t right about everything — but, then, that’s how real science works.
- Yet Another Example of David Barton’s False History – Actually, Barton and Wallbuilders have been touting this since at least 2005 (http://www.wallbuilders.com/LIBissuesArticles.asp?id=136), though it seems to have very little traction. There’s a reference to this hypothesis in the Wikipedia (though not to Harry Hoosier himself) but nobody aside from one historian seems to back this particular tale. In short, Barton’s history is not demonstrably false here, but it’s certainly not well-founded (and Barton’s spin on it of people being admiring of folks that Hoosier had converted is definitely not the reason the historian suggested was how the epithet came about).
