Book Review: “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” by J.K. Rowling (1997)

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It’s difficult to extricate myself from the movie version of this book when considering the book itself. I read the full series some time back, but have seen the movies (courtesy of my daughter) so many times, the distinction blurs.

This is a good book, a solid, juvenile-friendly tale. It distinguishes itself from the cinematic version by added detail, somewhat less epic / visual scene-setting (the trip below the trap door is much less vivid than what the movie provided), but with more inclusion of supporting cast (Dudley’s buddy, Neville’s inclusion in many additional scenes). The filled-out narrative makes more sense than some of the abridged scenes of the movie, but the movie’s vividly selected actors easily take over the faces and voices of the book.

Enjoyable and a fast read for an adult.
