Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….
- Matt Taibbi: Senior SEC investigators order routine destruction of records, promote “self policing,” take jobs with the companies they “investigate” – Boing Boing – I can appreciate the issue of someone with specialized training working in the SEC having skills most marketable with companies the SEC regulates. But this kind of revolving door doesn’t pass the sniff test, esp. given the SEC’s other lack-of-enforcement activities (and record-destruction, fergoshsakes).
- Grilled Cheese Martinis – Boing Boing – Um … no. I mean, I like grilled cheese sandwiches, and I like martinis. That doesn’t mean the two need to be combined. Really.
- Aug 19, 2011 – Epiphany – Okay, there’s a HUGE amount of truth in this one. For me, at least.
- After a Daring Escape, Extension Cord is Very Tired – Actually, what confuses me here is that it’s the male end of the cord. Was it being hooked up to a generator?
- Eric Boehlert: FLASHBACK: Facing 9.5 % Unemployment, Reagan Set Off On 25-Day Summer Vacation: Eric Boehlert
- BBC News – ‘Retweet’ and ‘woot’ make Oxford dictionary debut – Okay — “woot” makes up for “mankini”. We don’t have to destroy humanity this week.
- Gutters: Issue #178 – Rus Wooton – The charge is all too true to the extent that I’m seeing a lot of story lines petering out or simply being wrapped up far too quickly. That’s esp. true in comics that were being run on B teams while the A team talent was working in advance on the DCnU. Plus there’s the whole “Why should I invest in what’s going on here if it’s all being rebooted next month?” thing. On the other hand, a few writers have taken the (imposed) opportunity to do some very nice conclusions to their runs and their characters (Gale Simone on “Batgirl” being an excellent example).
- Fact-Checking Rick Perry On Climate Change – Perry’s either playing this card because he believes it (scary) or because it’s simply a dog whistle for those who believe it (also scary).
- Is Obama Losing The African-American And Latino Communities? – If you turn off the folks who spelled your margin of victory, you not only sow the seeds of your own defeat, but run the greater national risk of causing them to disenfranchise themselves for the future.
- Rick Perry defends his climate change denial [Thoughts from Kansas] – “All of his substantive claims have been addressed long ago, but this isn’t about substance. It’s about claiming the ‘conservative white male’ mantle of science denial, locking in that crucial demographic in a messy Republican primary battle.”
- Republican lawmakers interfere (again) in diesel cancer study : The Pump Handle – Right. Tell me again about how the GOP is looking out for the little guy and the average Joe Worker.
- Colorado congressman wants ballots printed only in English – The Denver Post – Yes, that’s my Congresscritter, the dolt.
- Bachmann: The American People Are Concerned About “The Rise Of The Soviet Union” | Right Wing Watch
- Majority of Republicans Doubt Theory of Evolution – Sigh.
