Unblogged Bits (Sat. 3-Sep-11 1731)

Links (most recent first) that caught my eye, but did not warrant full-blown blog entries ….

  1. I’ll Toast to That. Not. – TI is a very cool organization, and it really can help folks learn how to do public speaking. Unfortunately, this redesigned logo goes from something possibly off-putting retro to something so generic as to be almost meaningless.
  2. Clergy told to take on the ‘new atheists’ – Jonathan Wynne-Jones, Religious Affairs Correspondent – The Telegraph – RichardDawkins.net – I think the ABC has it wrong here. The challenge is not to out-argue with words, but to outshine in actions. If faith is being seen as a “social problem,” the goal should not be to argue that it is not, but to demonstrate that it is not, and that it is, in fact, a social good.
  3. Martin Luther King’s Dream Deferred Again, This Time by a Typo Set in Stone. – The more I read about this, the goofier it sounds.
  4. Comcast Will Charge for Hurricane Irene Service Outages, Blames God [Online Gaming] – Acts of God (which hurricanes usually come underneath) are usually a legit reason for a contractor to avoid having to provide a service they committed to. So if Comcast had committed to installing cable at your house and the hurricane hit, you couldn’t sue them for not meeting their commitment. Nor would they be liable if you had some sort of service level agreement with them as to how much of the time your cable was supposed to be up. Nor would they (probably) be liable for replacing your equipment ruined in flooding. On the other hand, claiming that they they don’t need to have provided service AND you have to still pay for it … seems like really bad PR, and legally shaky (to a layman).
  5. Articles: Registering the Poor to Vote is Un-American – Apparently the idea that the poor should get to vote for their interests is un-American. Presumably, though, Mr Vadum would think it’s jim-spanky fine if the rich get to vote for their interests.
  6. South Carolina Gov. Haley Insists On Disbanding The ‘Un-American’ National Labor Relations Board – Because heaven forbid there be any government agency that stands in the way of business treating workers however the hell they choose to.
  7. DC Women Kicking Ass – What is it with DC and marriage these days? – Because the best way to provide someone with “fresh, new creative directions and exciting new story lines” is to retcon away his marriage. Say what?

  1. I can only assume its the low population density (contrary to what some may say the US isn’t bursting at the seams – it is 179 on a list of 241 for population density).

I can see no other way that you breed so many lunatics – it must be the lack of other people nearby that leads to extremist attitude. Well that and the fact that we got rid of all our religious nutters and let them interbreed for 400 years!
