You are where you eat

An interesting guide (admittedly not from an unbiased source) as to employee conditions at quite a number of national and regional restaurant chains.

While all of the categories listed are problematic, the one that any person who dines out should be most concerned with is sick days. I just spent three days off of work because I was sick — but it was paid time off. If my choice was between being out sick and not having money to cover the rent, groceries, etc., I'd be much more likely to be in if I could stand on my feet. Which, in turn, would spread my illness to coworkers and customers.

Just what you want at a restaurant, right?

The question, of course (for myself as well) is whether a list like this actually influences my dining choices. #ddtb

  1. It always drove me completely bonkers at the factory I worked at a couple years back that contingent (outsourced employees) were given shitty sick time from their employer. I complained (in a nice way) to management where I worked that I was really concerned. Not just for them but for us.

Its completely unreasonable to me that I can do my due diligence and stay home from work but its all for not when one of them come to work sick. And I'm not complaining about them, who can blame them? In that situation I would go to work sick too.

This guide is pretty eye opening. Stunning how many do not give sick time. And many are nice restaurants too.

  2. Yeah, that aspect surprised me, including some I usually associate with good customer service. Might have to tip more.

Problem is, I don't see this as a situation that normal social/commercial levers apply to, especially since it is so pervasive. It's possible it something that a strong unionizing effort might be able to address, but it's also something that might lend itself to basic legislation. The US is, I believe, the only major economy (or Western economy) that doesn't have legally-mandated sick leave. I think that's wrong, morally and pragmatically.
