  1. I was surprised the first time I heard him on the Dragnet radio show. Jack Webb used him in various supporting roles before casting him on the TV show.

Man, how long before every actor I remember from my youth is gone?
    🙁

    1. He also had a guest star role on M*A*S*H before being cast, as a general (as I recall) out to get Hawkeye for some rest leave antics. “But first, a musical number!”

I liked his Sherman Potter character a lot. On the other hand the Joe Friday / Bill Gannon byplay was classic.

  2. He and Dick Shawn were the bright spots in an otherwise pretty terrible movie called What Did You Do in the War, Daddy? He played Major Potts who comes to a small Italian town to check on the soldiers who are supposed to be putting down a resistance. He’s kidnapped, runs into some bank robbers, and then gets lost in the catacombs under the village…insanity (and hilarity) follows. When I first saw the character (guest appearance) on Mash, I knew that Major Potts in the movie had inspired it. I loved him as an actor. He will be missed.
