Oh! I'm so sorry to hear this news.
I was surprised the first time I heard him on the Dragnet radio show. Jack Webb used him in various supporting roles before casting him on the TV show.
Man, how long before every actor I remember from my youth is gone?
🙁
He also had a guest star role on M*A*S*H before being cast, as a general (as I recall) out to get Hawkeye for some rest leave antics. “But first, a musical number!”
I liked his Sherman Potter character a lot. On the other hand the Joe Friday / Bill Gannon byplay was classic.
He was 96, so maybe not the youngest actor for you to mourn for, @Avo …

He and Dick Shawn were the bright spots in an otherwise pretty terrible movie called What Did You Do in the War, Daddy? He played Major Potts who comes to a small Italian town to check on the soldiers who are supposed to be putting down a resistance. He’s kidnapped, runs into some bank robbers, and then gets lost in the catacombs under the village…insanity (and hilarity) follows. When I first saw the character (guest appearance) on Mash, I knew that Major Potts in the movie had inspired it. I loved him as an actor. He will be missed.
@Ellie – Ah … I remember that. Heh..
