Books are books

Oh, spare me the snarky distinction between "literary fiction" and "genre fiction," complete with eye-rolling blurbs like, "It's not future classics that push digital sales, but more downmarket fare. No cliche is left unturned, no adjective underplayed. … In digital, dross rises."

Amidst all the nose-pinching, there are a few items of note: "The reading public in private is lazy and smutty. E-readers hide the material. Erotica sells well. My own downmarket literary fetish is male-oriented historical fiction (histfic). Swords and sails stuff. I'm happier reading it on an e-reader, and keeping shelf space for books that proclaim my cleverness."

While I grant there have been times when I've had a few trepidations about a particularly awful book cover as I walk down the street (and need not worry about it when reading my Kindle), I don't buy books for the shelf display, nor do I buy different paper books for home vs. my ereader.

But, then, I'm one of those proles who enjoys his genre fiction, rather than dallying over Dickens (which was mass-market media in its era) or Joyce. #ddtb

  1. Heh. I was just thinking about this yesterday. Nice to know that it’ll be hard for pubs to get all that nice Amazon data on what types of indie books are really selling…”Marketing research? Bah! We need another story about how marriage is too hard, growing up is impossible, and nothing really happens! That’s your @#$%^& marketing research. I didn’t go to Vassar for this erotica crap!!!”
