What is private property? How do we know that someone owns something? Why do we call the police or rely on the courts to determine such things?
Because we trust the system. We trust that records are complete and accurate, that the people responsible for managing those records are honest and diligent, and that actions taken by those in power are legal and justified and proper.
If we lose that trust — if we begin to believe that records are incomplete, inaccurate, and that the legal system is unable to determine who "owns" something, and those who claim to own something might or might not, and that there are people manipulating those legal records for their own gain … then property ceases to be something protected by law and instead becomes protected by force. Private property becomes subjective, not objective … and the collapse of the real estate bubbles over the past decade or two will be feeble shadows of what comes next. #ddtb
