I keep hearing that John Carter opened to mixed reviews, but everyone I know / follow whose seen it had triffic fun. I've seen one person mentions some structural flaws, but that was about as far as it goes.
That said, I'm not surprised the film is struggling, given the horrifyingly awful marketing campaign for the flick (is it a barbarian movie? is it a Dune-like epic? is it … what the heck is it, and why should we care?).
I need to make a point to see it this weekend myself, before it drops into the teeny-tiny screens at the multiplex. #ddtb

Years from now, marketing schools will teach John Carter as an example of where the Disney team did everything wrong, at least in America.

I thought it was fine (not amazing), but I just re-read “Princess of Mars” and spent way too much time thinking about the differences between the book and the movie (none of them bad). My family thought it was tons of fun.
I thought the movie was great, and I'm planning on taking my family to see it.
I really enjoyed it and, yeah, the marketing for it stunk.
Never saw marketing for it, because I don’t watch TV, and never saw any trailers for it.
I don’t actually remember if ERB had strong female characters or not, or whether he wrote them as equals to men, on Mars at least.
I had a grand time, especially since we don’t watch 3D (fwiw, there is a lobby attendant at the closest cinema whose first name is Bram). Dejah Thoris sure had a good costumer. I was watching the way she held her sword on her arm in attack position, because our belly dance troupe (ATS/ITS) uses almost the same placement, but with the right arm cross-body and the sword-shaped dance prop pointing downward as we spin (once, pause, again, then do something else).
@Marina – Glad you enjoyed it. There are strong female characters in the books, esp. if you go in looking for them — but it primarily remains a male adventure.
