A lot of people Assembled for "The Avengers"

As another article I read put it, $200MM is a good opening weekend for all films playing combined. And it's way more than Thor, Iron Man, and Cap earned total in their opening weekends.

Well done. Don't know quite how they managed it (beyond putting out a good film that was a combined sequel of some well-received flicks), but congrats.

And if that means a sequel … I do hope Joss is involved in it.

‘The Avengers’ Breaks All-Time Domestic Box Office Opening Weekend Gross
Take a seat Harry Potter. Step back Batman. Put away that arrow Katniss. There’s a new king of the box office world and it’s a throne shared by several superheroes. Early reports say Joss Whedon ‘s The Avengers will end the weekend grossing $200.3 million, setting the all-time opening weekend domestic box office record by a large margin. It crushed the previous record held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 by almost $30 million thanks in part to the second biggest Friday gross of…

  1. I assumed as much — though if it had flopped we wouldn't have heard any more about such things.

Actually, I heard anecdotally that, after nobody was interested after the last two outings, there's talk now about a Hulk sequel with Ruffalo starring.

Having seen the screen credits teaser, I'm definitely jazzed for the next "Avengers" installment.

  2. I only managed once (and, honestly, that'll probably be it until the Blu-Ray hits).

Ruffalo was outstanding as Banner. If they give him a good movie to go with, I think it will do well.

  3. I also thought Ruffalo did a great job. And Joss actually gave the Hulk personality. I also liked that Black Widow was given such a meaty part to play, that there were no love interests, and that girlfriends (Gwyneth Paltrow, Natalie Portman) were shipped off to Girlfriend Island for the bulk of the movie.

  4. Joss managed to do something with all of the characters — funny sequences, dramatic sequences, action sequences. It was one of the most balanced (and richly so) movies of its sort I've ever seen. Natasha had a great role — and the battle between her and Hawkeye was excellent (and played both on their similarities and their strengths).

I'm also glad the girlfriend stuff was kept to a minimum, but not completely ignored; Pepper Potts played a decent supporting role to Tony, and we did get at least a passing mention of Jane Foster. There was going to be a sequence about Cap tracking down Sharon Carter after the past decades, but it was cut for time (and, I suspect, balance). The fact that Joss (and the studios) didn't feel compelled to play much with love interests was an excellent suggestion.

Hmmm. So when do we get a Black Widow movie?

  5. I'd definitely look forward to seeing a Ruffalo Hulk.

As for Firefly, and this is coming from a huge fan, I'm content with letting it rest. I loved the series, but am afraid it would totally be borked if they went back to the well again.

  6. I do have my doubts there as well, +Mark Means, as the actors have moved on (though they all seem pretty clear they'd enjoy a return) and aged, I might feel different if they'd never done the Serenity movie (for all its flaws and goodness), but as they did, it may well be best to simply move on and ponder a parallel universe where it ran for seven seasons to great fannish acclaim.

  7. While there were darn few women in the movie (currently comments on the comments before I read the article), ALL of them were Whedon-style.

I enjoyed the possibilities of Tony and Bruce working together on something in the future–I’m sure anything they set their minds to would be phenomenal.

I loved what the Hulk did after Loki gives his “I am a god” bit. Bouncy, bouncy, bouncy, petty demigod! Hadn’t seen Capt. America when it came out, but one of our cinemas will show it in August, in a cult movie series.

I found a certain kind of joy in the final word of Loki’s rant of name-calling towards Natasha: quim. Not a word I see much out of Victorian porn. I was trying to use it as a Scrabble word in the early 80’s, and two of the other players didn’t recognize it: the one who did blushed a bit and said I couldn’t use it. Wonder if it went over the heads of the censors, and how much of the audience.

  8. I had a great deal of fun watching this movie.

I don’t think anyone in The Biz can say Joss Whedon is a one-off or a loser now.
