The Wrath of God

Evangelists of a conservative Christian bent seem to take particular and unseemly glee in natural disasters befalling others whom they consider sinful or otherwise prone to being struck down by The Lord.  Hurricane Katrina? Obviously God punishing gays marching in Mardi Gras parades. Earthquake in a Muslim country? Clearly Jesus flexing his anti-Muslim muscles. Some untoward event happening in San Francisco, or Portland, or New York, or Massachusetts? God hates liberals and their pro-gay, anti-Christ attitudes.

How that will somehow get translated into the fires sweeping around and into the Colorado Springs area, including the Air Force Academy, is hard to say.  For my part, I'd think Jesus would be urging us to be more busy helping our stricken neighbors, than figuring out how those neighbors somehow "deserved" being stricken.

I'll have more to say about this later, and for the record I am mortified at what is happening to Colorado Springs. But I cannot hold this in: Colorado Springs is an evangelical center – almost a New Jerusalem of the "Family"- defending, Dominionist right-wing Christian bigotry that currently possesses the Republican party like some kind of alien brain-slug. And one of the things this bunch has said is that natural disasters are a clear message from God. If so maybe they had better shut up for a while and figure out what that message is. Because it sure ain't "Keep hating gays, blaming the poor, and making war." For once the wrath of God as you understand it has landed exactly on your doorstep.
