While this is a pretty interesting article, what's really amusing is when you get to the comments and see what a vibrant and contentious thermostat geek community there is out there. Reminds me a lot of camera geeks, in ways both good and bad.
I could see getting one of these, though I'd probably want to do more reading (which would probably end up muddying the water further). It does also make me wonder if we should consider moving where our thermostat is to a more core and representative location.

A friend has one. He seems happy with it. His son found it interesting enough that he wanted to demonstrate it for me. The one thing I worry about is its dependence on the web service. What happens if the company stops providing that service?
Then you still have a thermostat, and you can still access its controls directly. Presumably you lose the monthly report and the tie-in to the weather. Unclear if the apps still work at that point, but you still have a usable product.
Mary wants one, perhaps when we get a new HVAC system next year.
