A level, if low, playing field in Ohio

Ohio's popular early voting law — a response to major crowds and difficulty getting into vote in 2004 — was done away with earlier this year. Instead, individual counties were allowed to decide whether or not to allow early voting, and for what hours.

And the funniest thing happened.  In Republican-leaning counties, county GOP reps sided with the Dems to allow early voting.  In Democratic-leaning counties, the GOP reps opposed the earlier hours, and the Republican Secretary of State broke the deadlock by not approving early voting.

After widespread bad publicity and protests, the Secretary of State has set uniform rules for all counties — which will allow some early voting, but with restricted hours that may impact people who work or have problems with transportation to their polling site.  But at least it will be a level playing field for both parties.
