Family goes to (comes from) pot

Well, not really, but I was amused to discover, after the recent flurry of discussion about the legalization of marijuana and hemp cultivation in Colorado that Margie's 4th great-grandfather (John Williams (1789-1852) was a farmer and hemp manufacturer in Woodford Co., Kentucky.

  1. There's an interesting history behind including hemp in the marijuana laws. I only vaguely remember it, but it basically showed the whole thing was an early lobby group killing the hemp industry to boost… was it cotton? Something like that. To be successful, they had to daemonize marijuana. No idea how much was "true" vs. pro-marijuana, but I do recall finding it very interesting and shockingly plausible at the time. Wish I had more details.

  2. I've definitely heard that rumor. Given that hemp was a significant industrial crop from the founding of the United States, that it was federally suppressed (for no sound reason) says to me that there was money at stake in there somewhere.
