Roger Schlafly is a Dolt (WASPishness Edition)

Roger Schlafly (son of Eagle Forum founder Phyllis Schlafly) on his Eagle Forum blog:

'America was founded by WASPs — White Anglo-Saxon Protestants. They had nuclear families, attended church, and believed in the Protestant work ethic. Republicans are seen as believing in traditional American values.

Democrats campaign largely by badmouthing traditional American values, and convincing various demographic groups that they are outside the Republican base, and hence better off voting Democrat. So non-whites, non-Christians, and non-marrieds vote Democrat out of group identifications. That is, they see it as being in their group interests to tear down traditional American culture.'

See, what America is really all about is Whites, Anglo-Saxons, and Protestants! So how dare those non-Whites, non-Anglo-Saxons, and non-Protestants think that identifying themselves as a group and voting that way is the right way to go!? I mean, they should just become more White, more Anglo-Saxon, and more Protestant, and then they'll be more Republican and therefore more American!

So all you Africans, Asians, Levantines, swarthy Southern Europeans, and definitely you Catholics, Jews, Muslims, and Hindoos, get with the program! Stop letting people convince you that you should label yourselves by demographics and become more like us Real, Traditional Americans!

  1. Does he think that WASPs don’t vote Republican out of group identification as much as other groups?

But that’s okay, because they are AMERICANS and thus voting for AMERICA (which is them) and therefore it is a GOOD AND HOLY THING.

And as far as the “traditional American values” of the founders, …

He’s referring, of course, to their strict adherence to Southern Baptist orthodoxy, their abhorrence to abortion, their love of guns, and their steadfast opposition to taxes. Oh, and the value of being white and Anglo-Saxon.

  2. Little late here, but wanted to point out that I’m a WASP…sort of. I mean, if one is Anglo-Saxon (which I am) one is going to be white, so I’ve always thought WASP was redundant, and should be ASP. I suppose WASP sounds better than ASP. Anyway, I say “sort of,” because the Schlaflys and their ilk don’t necessarily consider Anglicans to be “one of them,” even though there were many among the Founders who were exactly that.

I have digressed. I’m a WASP and I voted for Obama, and haven’t voted for a Republican since 1992 when Jack Quinn disappointed me so greatly. Fool me once…

    1. Well, I suspect the main requirement was being White — but once those Celtic/Gaelic types started coming over, not to mention those Southern European/Mediterraneans and Slavs … well, something had to be done.

And, yes, there are many ways that the Anglican Church stands somewhere in-between as far as the Protestant Reformation is concerned, though, as you note, many of the Founders were of that label (George Washington himself comes to mind).
