Interesting article here on researchers who showed that imagery of disgusting impurity from environmental pollution was most effective in swaying conservatives about environmental issues and government intervention in same.
This ties in with discussions about "purity" and "disgust" as motivators among religious (particularly) conservatives, something we see in various culture war contexts.
Which is fine — each of us is motivated by various things. One person would read a graph showing pollutant levels and be driven to action; others would read a story of someone's suffering, and do something about it; still others need to see the filthy impact. And all of those are legitimate and worthwhile ways of approaching the problem.
