To Be Continued

There are some big advantages to watching a TV series in something other than the "Plop down in front of the tube at 9 p.m. every Tuesday night" mode.  Whether it's off the DVR, streaming video, or season disc sets, being able to look at one another, glance at the clock, back at one another and say, "What the hell, let's watch the next one!" is priceless.  (Well, sometimes a price is involved.)

Also, in all of those modes, less or no commercial interruption.

The main downside is that you may not see things for weeks or months after all your cool friends saw and wanted to natter about "That most awesomest episode ever!"  Plus, of course, all the references in passing and memes and online reviews and the like.  The threats of both Spoilers and being Out of the Loop are a very real ones.

But usually worth it.

  1. In general, I agree. Almost everything I watch is time-shifted by the power of the DVR. I do not like watching shows on the Web. Sitting at my desk in front of a monitor does not compare favorably to plopping down on the couch in front of a 50" HD TV. I can watch online shows on the big TV through my laptop, but the video quality is often much poorer than if it came through HD cable or HD Roku Netflix.
