Corporations are voters, my friend

Well, they vote with their lobbying money and their campaign contributions.  But along the line of the personhood of corporations, a Montana Repulican state legislator floated a bill that would give local corporations actual votes in municipal elections.

And, yeah, it was immediately tabled, and everyone has a good laugh. But how long from it going from a laugh, to something given rhetorical lip service, to full-fledged partisan push, to a reality that gets thrown out in court, to a reality that a conservative SCOTUS decides is, well, y'know, right in keeping with Citizens United?

I'm not laughing.

Next up: "God gave corporations inalienable rights. It says it right there in the Declaration of Independence, so all the Founding Fathers clearly intended it."

  1. To be honest, it really should be a great idea.

Everyone (and do mean every US Citizen) should be able to go out and incorporate themselves, get all the tax bonus’ and lower tax rate, and still be able to vote.

Also, contract law for payment of services (wages) would be far better and clear cut.

Instead of having political parties, you would have lobbying groups, and with the whole Citizens United laws kicking in, no other coporation would be able to figure out which indevidual coporations paid for which lobbying group.

To me, it sounds like the logical outcome of the Corporatist path that we are on.

    1. At which point, @bd, they will limit it to certain types/sizes of corporations, corporations with real estate, corporations with more than 5 employees, etc. Can’t have *everyone* getting such an advantage …

  2. The Democrats should run with this as a logical-extension caricature to discredit the entire notion of corporate speech.  They did the same thing with abortion, didn't they?  (I wish I could remember the representative who proposed it…)

  3. 1) Get Democrat millionaire/billionaire
    2) He buys land in town
    3) He sets up multiple companies
    4) He sells a plot of land to each company
    5) On Election day he makes great show of voting, then rejoining the back of the queue for each company.

    1. Unfortunately, it seems there are more Republican millionaire/billionaires, so I’m not sure it would work. Moreover, thought that might influence some of the tactics, it’s the principle of the thing I freaking dislike, not which lever they pull.

  4. I realise their are more Republican Billionairs, and they would be doing this anyway, but if you can get a friendly one to ostentatiously keep joining the end of the queue (rather than in secret by post) it will highlight the stupidity of the situation – That whole ‘stop quoting me to make me look stupid’ thing the right hates
