RIP, Google Reader (July 1)

Well … poop.

True, my own Reader use is way, way down over the last year or two.  Yes, Google's Plus experiment worked in most ways, though ironically one thing it has done is made me more remote from the rest of the Internet (except those bits with a Plus or Twitter presence).  Information overload, and even though I still have dozens of feeds in Reader, there's only a handful that I go in and check periodically.

Frankly, the biggest shame here is the huge stake this puts in the heart of RSS, which remains a fantastic way of distributing and aggregating content, but isn't "monified" enough in some way to be worth Google (or anyone else of note) doing anything serious with it.  That strikes me as very dumb.

I will need to make a concerted effort to go through my feed list and create favorites out of the sites I still follow. Irksome, and sadly it didn't need to be that way.

  1. Removing the sharing features did it in for me a long time ago. Real shame, because I had a great community of friends that would keep one another very well entertained and informed via shared feeds. Plus is nice, but it is no replacement for Reader.

  2. From my Reader Trends page:

From your 317 subscriptions, over the last 30 days you read 15,095 items, clicked 437 items, starred 13 items, and emailed 0 items.
Since November 17, 2011 you have read a total of 300,000+ items.

And I've been using it for yeeeaaaaarrrrrrrsssssss. This is only from November of 2011. Yeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrsssssssssss.

  3. For me:

From your 353 subscriptions, over the last 30 days you read 112 items, clicked 5 items, starred 1 items, and emailed 0 items.
Since December 16, 2005 you have read a total of 184,695 items.

  4. Me:
From your 213 subscriptions, over the last 30 days you read 550 items, clicked 60 items, starred 31 items, and emailed 0 items.
Since August 6, 2008 you have read a total of 61,752 items.

I've been working hard to keep my subscriptions below 200.

  5. From your 16 subscriptions, over the last 30 days you read 207 items, clicked 0 items, starred 0 items, and emailed 0 items.

Since April 10, 2009 you have read a total of 10,936 items.

I use the hell out of reader. I'm going to miss it 🙁

(since I use the google reader app on my phone apparently my reads don't match up with my clicked and starred items)
