Lobo, from Ridiculous to Ridiculous

When it comes to comics, I have never been a Lobo fan.  Indeed, I tend to find that kind of self-mocking over-the-top humor (whether it's Lobo, or Deadpool, or even Ambush Bug) to be more than a bit irksome except in small doses.  Which is why, of course, when certain characters show they're popular in those small doses, and suddenly become big hits (mini-series! full series! major roles in cross-overs! character XYZ month!), it drive me bats.

The new Lobo in DC Comics (who's not the new Lobo we ostensibly have been seeing in the New 52 to date, for the five of you still following Stormwatch) has one thing going for him: he's not the old, classic, "Main Man," genocidal biker with a charmingly bullying attitude and a penchant for space dolphins.  Instead, he's — well, he's grim. He's gritty. He's humorless. He's sleek and dark and pretty and deadly and pretty deadly and …

Wow. He's really boring and cookie-cutter-template-looking.  Especially given everyone in the DC Universe these days.  He even has a high collar. And his MO doesn't really sound all that bold and innovative, either.

Ho-hum. I'm not exactly bursting into tears and traumatized by the idea that DC is changing the Lobo character — but I am far from impressed by the idea that in deciding to do so they came up with such a wildly generic and  uninspiring character in doing so.

(Oh, and Ben Affleck as Batman? Not wowed by the idea, not terrified or infuriated. We'll see.)

DC Comics completely erases Ben Affleck from comc fans’ minds by redoing Lobo.

  1. Actually, I used to like Ambush Bug……but, as you said, in small doses.

Deadpool was as overexposed as Wolverine, in my opinion and I never really cared for Lobo, either.

Kind of glad I'm not current on my comic reading.
