An interesting article (h/t +George Wiman) on why old time photos and paintings didn't feature smiling subjects. It's not just because it's hard to hold a smile for long, but because big grins were considered … well, declasse, and kind of stupid-looking.

While smiles are the "standard," I'll note for candid photos I like a variety of facial expressions.
