Nice to see Paul McGann’s 8th Doctor having his ‘canon’ credentials properly established – I know some younger viewers dispute this, and also him getting a role after the failed reboot- linking classic and new series.
I’m guessing young ‘War Doctor’ is a bit of jiggery pokery of Caligula from I Claudius
@LH He looks a bit too old for his I, Claudius role there, but any of a number of other items since then would work.
I enjoyed McGann’s work in the ’96 TV movie, but it was always very hard to get a sense of him in the role through the oddnesses and “90s American TV Movie”ness of that venue. In just this six minute blurb, he’s firmly established his cred as a Doctor.
I don’t think anyone was questioning whether he was, canonically, one of the incarnations (we’ve seen his image a dozen times in recaps of the different doctors, not to mention the basic numbering scheme); the canon question was more about the audiobook adventures he’s recorded — which, apparently, are now firmly canon, since he says goodbye to several of his companions from those.
Love to see some more of him in the role at some point.
