The Return of the Incredibles

My favorite Pixar film is, a decade down the line, getting a sequel.

The only thing bad about this is concern that it might be a bad sequel. How to come up with a fresh story that works with the characters, isn't a rehash of the original, and doesn't break the original either, is the most significant challenge.  I trust Brad Bird to give it a good shot, though.

Here's hoping, too, they get back the original voice cast. Oh, and Michael Giacchino on the music, please.

The Parr family is being called into action once again. After all, the world never stays saved.

  1. I guess. The risk is that a lot of them are external directions — being driven by events — versus internal directions — being driven by internal motivations in reaction to events.

So the first movie was not about Madman Seeks To Unleash Robot In Order To Become Beloved Hero, But Incredibles Defeat Him. It was about a guy who wanted to relive the glory days, and a woman who wanted security and stability for her family, and a kid who wanted to be popular, and a girl who wanted to overcome her shyness and insecurity — faced with a threat that made them all be something more than they were.

So what has to be at stake in the sequel is a threat that works against those motivations as they evolved through the first movie and is still a stirring storyline that informs us more about the characters and shows their continued growth.

Oh, and things 'sploding real good, too.

  2. One of my all-time favourites. Time to cross our fingers and hope for the best.

Just realized something while looking at the group shot of the Parr family. The spiffy new costumes that Edna made up for them? Have briefs! On the outside of their tights! Hah! In your eye, Man of Steel/New52!
