Why, yes, I dropped my Kindle, "Number 5 Is Alive," on the ground last night. And, yes, something in it broke so that it didn't work any more. And, yes, I have to replace it. And, of course, the replacement won't arrive until I'm on my business trip.
Fortunately, I bought Margie a new Paperwhite for our anniversary, which she'd not moved into yet. So I've re-registered that to me, reloaded it from Calibre, and "You Are Number 6" is now up and running.
(And, yes, do seem to be a bit rough on my Kindles. Though, to be fair, I use the hell out of those things.)

Sounds like you need a good sturdy case.
I actually have a pretty good case, and the distance dropped wasn't that far. I chalk it up to "one of those things".
