Dear Oracle. I hope that Ask.com is paying you millions of dollars to flog their stupid browser bar and search service, because that's about how much customer goodwill you sacrifice every time I do a Java update and have to carefully uncheck the boxes to opt
out of this crap.
Want to know why people don't update Java more frequently? For me, it's this.
Not only did I refrain from updating Java frequently, but I also refrained from updating OpenOffice frequently, because it was also provided by Oracle. So I waited two years to update OpenOffice…and then discovered that Oracle no longer managed the product.

And thanks to +John E. Bredehoft pointing it out, here's a petition to Oracle to remove this: https://www.change.org/petitions/oracle-corporation-stop-bundling-ask-toolbar-with-the-java-installer .
(Flogging unrelated software during an install is bad. Making it opt-out, so that you have to pay attention and uncheck the box, is just darned wrong.)
There is a two line registry change, or two line script, which turns off these requests
